The Superman 3 fight between -Clark Kent- and -Superman- is honestly pretty easy to understand. The simulated, flawed kryptonite he was exposed to had a corrupting effect on Superman. This culminates into a battle between the two halves, much like exposure to black kryptonite (which to my knowledge had not been introduced yet. This fight may have simply taken place in his head, or perhaps the effect of the fake kryptonite was strong enough to force a division resulting in two physical entities. By defeating the corrupted Superman, Clark Kent purged the kryptonite's effects and regained his normal power and mind set.
