Studio Ghibli's Top 20 Films of All Time

It's cinematic anime at it's peak! Join Ashley as we look over what we believe to be the best flicks to ever come from Studio Ghibli, including the likes of The Boy and the Heron, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, and more! Which of these films do you consider Miyazaki's masterpiece NGL I've got the Boy and the Heron in 3rd place, before Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. Call it recency bias or whatever lol but it is such an amazing, sentimental film embedded with countless metaphors and symbolism. It harks to all of Miyazaki's prior work and as a MASSIVE Ghibli fan it really blew me away. If anyone doesn't understand it I would suggest watching the video essay: Metaphor in the Boy and the Heron The Meaning of Ghibli by Densetsu Media. It's a bit long but amazing, especially once you get to around the 15 minute mark everything clicks.

SPIRITED AWAY can still make me get
The Feelings, even after all this years. THIS ONE SET THE BAR.
And In PONYO, SEEING THE DAVONIAN AND SILURIAN SEAS, ALONG WITH THEIR PREHISTORIC INHABITANTS; (THE DUNKLEOSTEOUS WERE AMAZINGLY DRAWN, WAS JUST BREATHTAKING!
Anyone who refers to these movies as CARTOONS, HAS NO IDEA OF THE DEPTH OR SHEER ARTISTIC NATURE OF THESE LITERAL VISUAL MASTERPIECES!
Thank God my big sister was WAAAY into All Things Japanese back in the 1980'S, and I was able to see every one of these films. I was 13 in 1993, and Because of her HUGE AND ECLECTIC COLLECTION, I WAS HOOKED ON STUDIO GHIBLI EARLY! AND I HAVE REMAINED A DIE HARD FAN OF ALL THEIR WORk EVER SINCE!
THIS WAS A GOOD LIST!
GREAT JOB!
P. S. - HOWLS MOVING CASTLE IS HANDS DOWN ONE OF THE BEST ANIMATED FILMS EVER MADE! LITERALLY IN A LEAGUE OF ITS OWN!

1. I love The Cat Returns! It's a fun movie to watch, I especially love the story and Tim Curry's performance as the king of cats was just phenomenal!
2. Grave of the Fireflies another personal favorite of mine because it's one of the few animated films that depict Japan during war times. And the only other animated Japanese war time films I know of are Barefoot Gen and In This Corner of the World.
3. One of my favorite things about The Secret World of Arrietty is that they based the story off of the film The Borrowers.

Kiki's Delivery Service was a film I was OBSESSED with as a kid. Now, I can say it kind of is a story of my current stage in life. I ventured forth from a very comfortable life to live on my own in a brand new city that I knew little about and knew nobody that lived there. Now, after going through some trials and tribulations, I can finally say I am succeeding. I now have friends, colleagues, and community involvement that has made me feel welcome. No matter where you place it on your list, it'll always be at the top of mine.

All of these films are FANTASTIC! I do have most of them in my film library. My personal favorite is Nausicaa Of The Valley of The Wind. At the time it was under a different name: Warriors of The Wind, way back in 1984. My late brother and I saw this version of the film and this was our introduction to Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. My brother didn’t get to see the other films as he was killed in a car accident in 1988. Whenever I watch the films, I will always remember him.

Any One Piece fans that haven't watched Laputa: Castle in the Sky, I highly suggest giving it a shot. Just make sure to watch it with the original Japanese voices. It really is a great adventure movie that will make you want to go Shishishi; -)

Princess Kaguya is so sad to watch.
All she wanted was to live a happy life with her parents, bit her father just wouldn't listen and forced a Princess life on her to the point she had to leave them and the world behind

reply

Good list. We can always argue about the place of this one or that one (I would rank Tales of princess Kaguya, the wind rises and grave of the fireflies much higher, but the conclusion is we have 20 masterpieces.
reply

My personal favorites are Ponyo, When Marnie Was There and Whisper of the Heart for its gorgeous animation and heartwarming story. The Boy and the Heron was beautiful and got to watch it in theaters.
reply

I’ve always loved watching the Cat Returns, so much love and entertaining moments the film had to offer. It’s a shame Tales of Earthsea wasn’t mentioned, I thought it was a good movie.
reply

I can rewatch all of these EXCEPT Grave of the Fireflies, it just decimates me every time. Takes like 4 viewings of howls moving castle and spirited away each to bring me back.
reply

My first love will always be Howl’s Moving Castle. One of Christian Bale’s best movies and he wanted any part after Spirited Away not knowing he would play Howl.
reply

Ocean Waves may not be as magical as the other Ghibli films but it will always have a special place in my heart because of how aesthetically pleasing it is.
reply

The only Studio Ghibli movies not on the list are
My Neighbours, The Yamadas
Ocean Waves
Tales from the Earthsea
And Earwig and the Witch

reply

I was 5 years old when I saw Howl’s Moving Castle in theaters with my mom. That is nostalgia. To me, it’s Hayao Miyazaki’s masterpiece
reply

The Boy And The Heron should get nominations for Best Animated Feature, Best Original Score, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture
