Pro hairdresser rates your curly hair routine
video description
ALSO, this might not be the case for all hair types but at least for my hair type (low porosity, coarse, 2a-2b waves, it is really important for my hair to have TONS of water in it when I'm applying product because my hair when its wet or has just had the water scrunched out using product is when my waves are most defined. If I wait for my hair to be dry before applying product such as a hydrating oil or gel or a light curl cream, it isn't going to absorb as well into my hair and I will usually end up with more frizz and sticky feeling hair. I also won't be able to create a gel caste which is kind of the entire point of using gel on wet hair.
The whole point of not using silicone is that it requires sulfates to remove and then you're caught up in a whole vicious cycle of drying out your hair with sulfates and adding more buildup to hydrate it. Thats why we prefer to use water soluble silicones. It is in fact possible to get a glassy, hydrated finish to your hair with using water soluble silicones and other curly girl friendly products such as a hydrating hair oil, hair masks, etc. Silicone is put in a lot of products to mimic healthy hair (which is usually not the case) so it just makes more sense to eliminate it as much as you can and eliminate sulfates (after a reset wash) too.
Other notes:
- The bowl method is very commonly used and is effective for many people (so I've heard, I've never tried it but I know that a lot of people (including friends of mine with 3a-3b curls) swear by it so its really dependent on your hair type/your routine as is everything else mentioned.
- Gel is not gonna weigh down her hair, it is gonna create a caste around it that is gonna help preserve the style frizz free, its gonna make it look super shiny and perfect once she crunches it out. Foam or cream on the other hand would weigh down her curls unless she uses a super light weight enhancer but even then, I would still recommend opting for a gel caste.

Brad shouldnt be criticizing and giving tips how how to treat curly hair or what to do and what not to do if he doesnt have curly hair, he very clearly has no idea what he is talking about. Growing up i had no clue I had curly hair so didnt take care of it, when I saw other people having the same issues and then started taking care of their hair how much of a difference it was, now I have healthy and shiny curls, Brad should not be doing this unless he has learned from someone with curls, this pisses me off just because if this was one of the first videos I found after learning I had curly hair, my curls would look like shit and Id be disappointed and would just think I had shitty hair and would go back to using heat all the time. Please dont listen to anything he is saying, watch videos with people who have similar hair types to you

So I dont have naturally curly hair but I have so many friends with curly hair and they always are saying that I am lucky I dont have curly hair because they can only brush it in the shower or when it is wet and I know that they are correct because I have seen there hair dry and it is really pretty but I can tell that they would not be able to brush it when dry. Also when I went camping with one of my friends I always noticed she never combed or brushed her hair when it was dry because she had curly hair and when we went to shower I noticed she always brought her comb or brush and that was the only time she could come or brush it.

It's not good advice to brush your curly hair semi dry instead of wet with conditioner. I've tried both and actually brushing it only wet with tons of conditioner is the only way I've been able not to have knots and comb it out at all (especially because my hair reaches my waist. Brad is great and all, but Brad also has never had naturally curly waist length hair, so I feel like don't brush it like that, brush it like this is something that will be very personal and individual to a lot of people. Brushing it dry or semi dry leads to a lot of breakage for me. Brushing it wet doesn't.

I literally have to put my product in soaking wet hair, it gives my curls the most definition once it dries. Ive tried with it damp and even just damp ill have insane frizz and hardly any definition or wont last the whole day. My products work best while super wet. Also never would I ever touch my hair with a comb or brush while its dry/damp. It yanks and I get way more breakage than detangling while its wet. I always detangle in the shower. Just what works for me, and my natural hair has never been healthier!

Brad, i dont think you ubderstand that you literally cant brush curly hair when its dry. Its harder to brush than straight hair and more hair gets ripped out when brushed dry. It also gets frizzy and uncontrollable. Curly hair needs to hold shape to be curly! Also its best to put product in curly hair when its wet so it spreads easily. Also, you give your hair shape when its wet via scrunching or brush/finger coiling do it makes no sense to add in product when its dry

when you have curly hair, the only time you can brush it is when it is wet. theres no point in washing it if you are just going to ruin all the time you spent styling it by brushing it when its dry! i brush my hair right after i put conditioner on because i feel like the conditioner penetrates my hair better that way. when i dont, it tends to have more wet frizz which is not fun.

A bit of constructive criticism I love your videos but this video proves you know barely anything about curls you are very talented but please educate yourself more on curly hair before giving out advice because youre giving wrong advice to a lot of your supporters everyones curls are different it depends on every individual person like porosity, curl pattern, texture etc

I have curly, but I cannot for my life, detangle when wet: (
My hair is thick, 3A and hip length, and towel dry for 20mi, then blowdry with cold air, and THEN detangle. I don't wear my hair curly anyway because I always wear it in protective styles, but even if I did I cannot detangle wet. My hair just gets too matted amd I get more breakage than when detangling dry.

brad brad brad.
1) dry brushing is only okay before washing normally IF needed. it causes so much breakage for us.
2) wet brushing makes the hair so much more shiny and is the only way to effectively detangle curly hair
3) soaking wet styling increases shine, reduces frizz, and adds definition. damp styling adds volume but leaves the hair dry and often frizzy

As long as it isnt damaging to your curls, it shouldnt really matter how they style it. As long as it gets them the results they like and it works for their curl pattern. Sure, you should give tips if they need help like if their curls are coming out too crunchy, use an oil, if your hair is super damaged, try using a conditioner with proteins and without silicones.

You are right about hair being at its weakest when wet but that only applys to straight hair. Not curly hair. Almost everything you said you should do for curly hair is something you SHOULDN'T do and will damage your hair. It is ok for a person with straight hair to do that but the complete opposite for curly haired people.

I actually started love my curls at 14 years old, but like, im trying so many things, I always have some hair at the nape with no definition, like on top curls and down waves, I think my hair are damaged by heat because my mom would ALWAYS straight my hair, so I think my curls are damaged and I dont know how to fix it

My future job is To be a Curly hair stylist for this reason, I feel like we get so much criticism from hair stylist who only know straight hair. I cant wait to make people feel good and KNOW the way to do their hair and give them real advice, everyone knows their own hair and I just wanna be able to help them with that: )
