My body reacts negatively towards cleansing agents, it's due to atypical connective tissue.
I stopped using most products about 6 months ago, that includes shampoo and conditioner. I use a boar bristle brush to distribute the sebum for my scalp all throughout my hair now. Both my scalp and hair have never been this healthy.
My hair is in between wavy and curly, very pliable, I do miss certain looks that I can't achieve without some type of fixing agent like gel. I recently tried some (pure) wool wax, it worked really well! I can just brush the wax out the same way I do sebum, so no need for cleaning agents.
Oil makes my hair look greasy and flat. I was scared wax would do the same, but it turned out to be the perfect fit for me. I recently ordered some (pure) beeswax as that's firmer than the wool wax, I'm excited to see what I can do with it. Wax has a lot of similarities to pomade, and very little in common with gel or hairspray.
Kaylee's tips are great, but I wanted to add a different perspective just in case somebody else struggles with the same things I do.
Pure boar bristle without plastic bristles, otherwise the plastic will scrape your scalp. I bought both cheap and expensive versions, they're equally as good. The bristles are firmer and longer if it's the expensive type, that makes it easier to detangle and reach the scalp. But I find myself gravitating towards the softer bristles of the cheap brush.
I brush my hair as often as I used to shampoo it, about once every 3 days. There's a lot of information on the internet on how to brush and honestly it's really not that deep. You don't need to do a certain amount of strokes, time, or give equal attention to all areas. Brush where your scalp has sebum build up and then go to areas of your hair that are dry, sometimes it takes me 2 minutes, sometimes it takes 20, use intuition not instructions.

So happy to see you back! I'm glad to hear you're doing better, and wishing you all the love and support as you continue your healing journey! You have helped me so much in my hair journey from dried and frizzy to healthy and smooth! a little surprised at how much of this I was already doing, but excited to add in a few more things to my routine. braids are my go to for rough days! I switch from a single to twin braids to help with breakage every now and again. My big struggle is remembering it's okay to rebraid when the whispies get to tickly. Also leave in conditioner to help with detangling for the win! A good deep conditioner for those extreme cleaning hair wash days can also be really useful. Calia has been my hair care brand of choice for several years and it has helped a lot with my hair struggles, especially the leave in conditioner since it's light and doesn't leave hardly any residue on your hands.

Doing my hair is the bain of my existence. I have super thick hair, cut it to my collarbone and got an undercut. Even with all of that washing my hair with a shampoo bar takes 15 minutes (not including conditioner, just the straight wash process) and a good 18-20 minutes if I use regular liquid shampoo. My hair also takes ages to dry because it's so thick and such low porosity. I towel dry for 30 mins-an hour and my hair is still pretty wet, so blow drying it takes another 20-30 minutes. If I waited for my hair to air dry I would be walking around at work with sopping wet hair or going to sleep with sopping wet hair because I simply dont have the time in my day or night to wait for it to dry on it's own. The struggle

I'm always so happy to see you posting!
Just passed this video to my friend who just gave birth, I'm sure she'll be able to find the tips and tricks useful
Just a teeny tiny opinion that it's not meant as a criticism and you're absolutely free to ignore: personally, I didn't love the changes of camera angle throughout the video, it actually looked really professional, but to me was quite distracting.
Please please please don't take it badly, it really was meant as just an opinion that I felt free to share because you're so lovely and empathetic.
I'll still be watching every video you post, and actually recreated some of your old ones on myself and even some friends for various events.

KC Davis talks about this in her book: How to Keep House While Drowning! She mentions how to deal when your overwhelmed with keeping up with the EVERYTHING, that sometimes its possible to get to the point where even brushing your hair is a struggle. She specifically mentions tying your hair up like you do, but also mentions silk sleep bonnets (which I'm obsessed with, so comfy. I can't believe how long your hair is now! Lucious! Also, I'm so happy you're not ignoring/pretending about the mental health. So many of us are struggling right now, and seeing someone in real time deal with it can feel really comforting that we're not the only ones that are hanging by our fingernails

Thank you for posting this, I am a disabled hairstylist that struggles to shampoo my own hair now and I’m allergic to hair products(most grooming products. I haven’t had my haircut in 5 years and am struggling since I can’t use the products that make it easier to manage it(I can only use cerave face wash for shampoo. I went from winning best hairstylist in my city to wearing a bun on my head every day. Thank you for being vulnerable, it can feel very lonely but of course as stylists we are used to hiding our emotions but I’m glad you didn’t. Sending a hug your way.

One thing I’ve found helpful is, if I have the bandwidth, I take the time to heat style my hair into curls once a week. I love wearing my hair natural when I can, but it takes a lot more effort to maintain/style and I can’t quickly brush it like that. If it’s heat styled then it takes little/no effort the rest of the week, and if I do the curls tight on the first day then they slowly fall throughout the week. I miss my natural hair, but you gotta do what you gotta do!

Hi Kayley! First of all, it's great to have you back and good to know that you are getting better and being able to take care of yourself. As someone who has consistently struggled with mental health, I know how challenging and scary that can be. Do you have any tips for keeping hair contained at night for someone with chin/shoulder length hair My hair doesn't tie up into a single pony yet for reference.

This is such a great and practical video! Thank you so much for sharing and helping others with a stigmatized topic.
Something I've found helpful during challenging times was to use a bonnet to protect my hair around the clock. When I was bedridden from pregnancy sickness or had small kids pulling on my hair constantly, being able to contain my hair in something easy was a lifesaver.

I’m so glad that you’re back, Kayley! You have a really special gift with having the ability to be honest and genuine in your videos. Judging from other people’s comments, I’m not the only one who thinks that. It’s so nice to see your slightly self deprecating gesture, in your intro, when you put your hands under your chin and flare your elbows out. Funny and sweet.

I definitely needed this today, like my mental health has been taking another dip and I find washing my hair and showering to be a really high effort task even when my mental health is good and so this video was exactly what I needed. I have been watching you since I was in middle school in like 2011 and I am glad that I have been able to grow with you!

It is so nice to see your videos popping up again! Thank you for all your efforts! Also, random question: I noticed you were wearing a flat snake necklace, and I love those as well, but my hair always gets stuck in between the little chains and creates so much damage and breakage (of both my hair and the necklace. Does this happen to you as well

when life is too much i often put some leave in conditioner in and just french braid it relatively tight and let it be like that for like a day or 2 (if i dont need to go to the office or smth. itll be tangly but not terrible when i take it out and its still the leave in conditioner helps. and its out of my face for a bit

This is so good! Whenever I feel like I’m slipping into a physical or mental downturn, I always use that last bit of energy to wash and blow dry my hair to keep it low maintenance for a few days. Also, I finally just got a microfiber hair towel at 33! WOW what a game changer! SO happy to see your face Kayley

just an added tip for those who struggle with their mental health and find it hard to take care of their hair (hi! it’s me) if your hair is extra dirty and you don’t have the time/energy to wash it just put it up in a slicked back pony or bun! add a little product and it’ll look intentional

added tip for anybody who gets annoyed with washing their hair, whenever my hair gets a little bit dirty I use this Raw Sugar Rosemary Vinegar Hair Rinse. You put it on wet hair (roots and ends, massage it in, and let it sit for like 3 minutes then rinse it out. Keeps my hair clean and soft!
