You are my hero! I've tried countless recipes, and they just never seem to turn out right (and I'm very experienced in the kitchen) Used this recipe to make a batch 2 days ago (to go with my pot of pinto beans. MAJOR yum yum) and they turned out perfect! I used lard from a little store here in town. They don't speak English well, but their lard is top notch. I'm QUITE sure the homemade lard made a big difference in the taste! As I type this I'm about ready to make another batch because with only two tortillas left from the last recipe? .well, you get it. I will say that keeping them in a ziplock bag and reheating in the microwave for ten seconds gives me the best results. (otherwise they do dry on on the cast iron pan) Thank you SO VERY much.

A few things I learned on the first two tries at achieving tortillas like those - I added a small amount more to the shortening because the first try, I noticed the tortilla didn't have that greasy appearance as it started to cook, as yours did. Also, in WI, the dry, cold air and forced air heating makes everything dry out very quickly. I used a very damp paper towel over the rolled out tortillas as they hung on the bowl, waiting to be cooked. It seemed to help get the texture closer to what I have in mind. However, I haven't got my tortillas to form air pockets/bubbles! Should I add more baking powder? I am hoping the third time's a charm. Thank you for patiently walking us through the steps and explaining everything clearly.

My tortillas did not turn out at all like yours. I followed every step as much as I could. When I started mixing the ingredients so that I could knead, my hand immediately sunk into the mixture and I was unable to get it out without grabbing a spatula. I finally got the dough to a similar texture and followed suit. When I put the tortillas in the pan, however, it turned into a flatbread type of deal. I don't know what went wrong during the process, but I had to throw the whole thing away. I'm so disheartened by this, as I already prepared the rest of the food. I don't even have the heart to try it again tonight.

saw someone post this on reddit a few days ago. Gave it a try this morning. Not sure if I'm rolling thin enough, and could probably make them bigger in my 12 CI skillet. Overall, I think it turned out really well. My wife and mother in law like the indian style nan bread and while their favorite bakery is closed right now, they said this is a pretty good alternative. They didn't come out very flexible like yours at the end but they still turned out alright. Thanks for the recipe. I'm saving it and going to make more another day. Worked well for my breakfast this morning with eggs, sausage, and cheese. :D

I made these following the recipe from this video. super soft dough and and yummy when first cooked. I reheated some just 5 hours later. YIKES! They were hard, stiff and not pleasant to eat. I was bummed out because I made them to share with family who weren t present immediately after I made them. The warning of 24 hr shelf life, should read a lot less. While they are still edible (crunchy and hard, but good flavor, I don t think I ll be making these again.

wow! You explain this process in great detail that I am going to try to make flour tortillas again after many years and the local store running out of this product because of the situation we are in. Back in the 80's, I used to live with a bunch of guys from Mexico and they all made their own flour tortillas but were pretty secretive about how they got their tortillas to look like the ones you would buy at the store. Again, THANK YOU!

I just found your YouTube video on tortilla making! I m so happy I did. I ve made them 3 times and I m getting better each time! We love the soft, fresh, tortillas! I still need to get the heat right but I m working on it. So easy to make and since the dough is silky soft, it s a breeze to kneed! I just need to find the measurements by weight you posted. I don t see them. Thank you so much for this second video!

Love that you redid the original. I m watching from March 2020 during the COVID19 nightmare and our stores are low on tortillas so I ve bought the ingredients to make some for me and my family cuz we can t not have tortillas lol. I was worried about not having a rolling pin or comal but this redo reminded me that we have a pizza pan, cast iron skillet, and wine bottles! Gotta make it work lol. Thank you!
