SP Chicken (SP ) is a nice restaurant that serves Isan food in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Here's the full review: On our last trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand, along with trying to eat and discover as much khao soi as possible, we headed one day for lunch to a restaurant known as SP Chicken (SP ) - they specialize in Thai style grilled chicken, actually more rotisserie style, and the full range of different Thai Isan dishes like som tam and sticky rice. The restaurant is small and family run, and located right in the old section of Chiang Mai, within the gates. The first thing you notice when you enter SP Chicken (SP ) restaurant in Chiang Mai is the beauty of their grilling chicken rotisserie. It's a one of a kind, stand up grill, where to coals are situated on the side, and the chicken are skewered and roast while spinning. There's a man, who full times watching the chicken, and occasionally brushes off any ash that may have blown on the birds - the quality control is fantastic. I could smell the chicken, and as soon as we walked in, I was ready to devour a chicken and some Thai green papaya salad to go with it. If you go to this restaurant in Chiang Mai, you should immediately order a full chicken gai yang, they are pretty small. So small in fact, that at the beginning, I actually smiled because the entire chicken could fit on a normal small sized plate. But I shouldn't have judged the chicken that fast, because after taking my first bite, I realized just how packed with flavor the chicken was. I literally ate the entire drumstick in one bite, and it was just incredibly juicy and oily and packed with tastiness. In addition to the expertly cooked chicken, what I really loved about SP Chicken (SP ) was their home-made nam jim jaew, the sauce used for dipping the chicken in. Along with gai yang, we also ordered a plate of yam dab wan moo, a salad made from liver, dressed in toasted sticky rice, and a blend of fish sauce and lime juice. It was excellent, the liver was nice and tender and I loved the fresh herbs like mint and cilantro. An Isan meal is never complete without an order of green papaya salad. We got som tam boo, green papaya salad with crab. It was excellent, mainly because I loved the good amount of lime juice that they used in it. If you are ever in Chiang Mai and looking for a delicious plate of grilled chicken, go check out SP Chicken (SP. Address: 9/1 Sam Larn Soi 1, Phra Singh, Muang Chiang Mai, Thailand Open hours: 11 am 9 pm daily

Chicken looked so good. LOL when it committed suicide by jumping in the sauce in the blooper. Wanted to ask about Thai versions of things like gyoza, mandu and spring rolls as there aren't a lot of videos on Youtube about these kinds of foods. I figure there are street vendors in Thailand who have these kinds of food and was hoping for some video and info on the different types available. Thanks.

Hi Ying & Mark, Just the aroma alone of a grilling / barbecuing chicken is usually enough to send me into a feeding frenzy Love the T-shirt; and by the way, thanks for opening my taste buds to chillies. Previously, I wouldn't touch them. Now I have Chilli on my Vietnamese pork rolls and Portuguese chicken burgers. I even have a Thai Chilli plant growing on my balcony. Great work guysJim.

Mark your smile is addictive Eating a drumstick almost in one bite your the man Picked up on when you said that the crab did not over flavor the salad, because I love Thai salads but anything that has those freshwater crabs in are a no no for me. However Ying (my wife the better half of DRAT) loves them We live in Chiang Mai now so no excuses for checking out SP Chicken.

Mark is absolutely my kind of taste, pepper hot is my middle name(hence, not spicy hot)it's very bizarre but true how people say spicy and it's supposed to mean hot, but it's totally incorrect. in many cases, i just particularly want pepper hot not spicy hot, but that's hard for many people to comprehend. cheers.

Mark, as much as I love Thai food and your videos, I would also love to see you visit other countries once in a blue moon and give reviews on their food. I know you've done them before. Japan, Korea, China, vietnam. Just a suggestion. but I still think your Thai food videos will be my favorite to watch: )

Just got back from SP Chicken. We only had half a chicken which was a mistake next time we will have a whole one It was so tasty, plus the salad without crab Pork liver salad and beef soup all in all a great venue - Thanks Mark for pointing it out to us.

That chicken is SUPER SAP, but 140 bht seems very high. My Thai family and friends live in Mahasarakham and Roi-ET, which have far fewer tourists, so maybe that is why. Regardless, I love the highlands of Thailand and will check this place out.
