Here's the full review of the restaurant: Khon Kaen is one of the major cities located in Thailands northeastern province of Isan (also spelled Isaan. Its sort of the rice bowl of Thailand, a huge province where much of the rice is grown and thats known for its farms and fields. Khon Kaen though, is actually a pretty decent sized city, not too big, but still big enough to have quite a few things to do and quite a few marvelous restaurants to eat at. One thing you absolutely dont want to miss eating when youre in Khon Kaen is som tam, which is green papaya salad, paired with grilled chicken, known in Thai as gai yang. The combination, along with some sticky rice, and in our case, quite a few more dishes as well, it makes a marvelous meal in Isan. There are literally restaurants serving Thai green papaya salad and grilled chicken everywhere you look in Khon Kaen, but one of the more well known spots in the city is a restaurant called Gai Yang Rabeab Kao Suan Kwang. Ive eaten quite a lot of gai yang throughout Thailand, so honestly I wasnt sure what to expect going to Gai yang Rabeab Kao Suan Kwang, but as soon as I walked to the front of the restaurant, and saw the incredibly grilling action at the front, I knew they were doing something right. At Gai Yang Rabeab Kao Suan Kwang, the chickens are very small - in Thai they are known as gai baan - which are similar to free range chickens - so they arent nearly as plump as other chickens. But I think they have much more flavor, and have better texture, perhaps a bit chewier, but more natural. The grilling system is pretty amazing. They have small circular clay grills on the bottom, which are then covered by big circular pans. Finally on top of the pans are the grills and the chickens. All the hot coals sit in the bottom grill, probably about 1 foot above the chicken. This method sort of works to slow roast the chicken so they have less direct heat, and so the oil doesnt drip into the coals and burn the skin. Anyway, as I soon found out, they know a thing or two about grilling chicken. Although the chicken looked a little dry to me as soon as it arrived at our table, I was amazed at how juicy and flavorful it was. The chicken wasnt really dry at all, but it was rather quite juicy, and moist. And probably what I loved most about the chicken was that it was so incredibly natural tasting, like real unmodified chicken, and with an amazing grilled smoky flavor to it. Along with gai yang, Ying and I also ordered a bunch of other Isan Thai dishes including: Isan pork soup, my favorite version of green papaya salad, minced pork salad, and grilled pork neck. I thought overall, the food at Gai Yang Rabeab Kao Suan Kwang ) restaurant in Khon Kaen ) was very good, but I thought the best thing was what they are most well known for: grilled chicken, which was incredibly delicious. If youre ever in Khon Kaen, this is a great restaurant to have a local Isan meal at, and to feast upon Thai style grilled chicken. Love all your videos. You make me hungry just watching you eat it That grilled chicken looks absolutely delicious. I wish I can duplicate the dipping sauce. I've been to Vietnam over 10 times. But I can't remember any of the addresses of the places I've eaten that are delicious. I usually go with one of my local relatives. They usually take me to a hole in the wall down some alley. They are the best restaurants to eat at. I've eaten at big restaurants and at the mall. I wouldn't recommend it. The food is not that great. Best of luck to Ho Chi Minh City. You must eat a Banh Mi ( from street vendor)

Hi Mark, great video as usual, can't wait to have gai yang with som tam again: ) about the advertisement, I reckon that whenever you keep it short as you did it doesn't bother me at all, and actually it could be quite interesting and useful for viewers, and hopefully profitable for you; -)Keep always being as positive as you look, cheers from Switzerland

Khon Kaen is where one half of my family is located, they live in the village of Sarngaew. Food in Khon Kaen is amazing and for the best price compared to tourist-y towns like Phuket where dinner is still 40 USD. Such a peaceful city, with great cooks.

I have to say there is too much health risk eating in places where the food isn't handled properly. Countries in Asia don't exactly have to meet or follow procedures and I doubt the Health Department is going after them either.

Hey Mark, have you ever come across larb made with tripe? I swear I've had it before This is an interesting meal food history-wise. tomatoes and papaya originated in South America, so I wonder when they made their way to Thailand.

Watching this video, I realized you are always mentioning the sauces but we've never gotten more info on how to make some of them. How about a cooking video where you make a few of them and offer suggestions on what to use them with?
