Andre Fowles of Miss Lily s in NYC is in the Munchies Test Kitchen making an ideal Jamaican breakfast: ackee and saltfish, paired steamed callaloo, crispy Johnnycakes, and fried plantain. This famous Jamaican dish is prepared with salted cod and ackee, a fruit found abundantly in Jamaica. Andre includes sides of steamed callaloo (Jamaican leafy greens, crispy Johnnycakes, and sweet fried plantain. Doc: I had a Jamaican guy come up when I worked the fish department in the grocery store. Sniffed, looked at the woman next in line and said 'mmm, smells familiah' I had to go in the back to stop laughing.

i've been wondering about ackee and saltfish ever since i heard mention of it in an episode of archer. it looks delicious! i'm intrigued as to what ackee tastes like, it looks similar in colour and texture to jackfruit but is apparently part of the lychee/longan family: o I feel like i could find a similar looking plate of food in kerala (south india) the fish, fruit, fried dough, plantain, there are so many similarities between the two and i've always wanted to incorporate more jamaican flavours into kerala cuisine ever since I ate at some random takeaway place in new york

If you guys haven't tried this yet do yourself a favor and do it! It's also very easy to make vegan as well. Just don't do the salt fish and sauteed more veggies into it like onions and pepper. It's how my mom always did it because she didn't like the salt fish in hers.

This looks delicious and I love Andre as a host. So great to learn about the recipes my aunts and uncles made growing up (but i had no idea how much work went into it.
