When it comes to hosting a proper high tea, there is certain etiquette to follow. It all begins with the tea, of course The correct way to prepare tea is to first warm the pot itself with hot water (who knew, and you may be surprised by what tradition says about adding milk. The tradition of putting the milk in first stems back to when fine bone china was used for tea sets. If you put the hot tea straight into the cup it would likely crack from the heat, so the cold milk was put in first to prevent this from happening. Also Popsugar, you mentioned the two schools of thought on milk in first before or after, but failed to mention the infamous Devon and Cornish divide related to jam and cream on scones? In a Devon cream tea it is cream on the scone first then jam on top; in a Cornish (Cornwall) cream tea the jam is put on first followed by the cream. It makes no difference to taste and is down to personal preference.

This is low tea, not high tea. and you pour the milk in first when you are using fine china becasue its thought that the heat of the tea will crack the fine china, since most people dont use fine china anymore most people add the tea after. Also you dont have to make a whole pot of tea, just a teaspoon per person and one for the pot. This was a very silly epesode.
