There is a great video where a guy goes out and buys a 1 knife and spends a large amount of time sharpening the hell out of it. It ended up being just as good as an expensive one.
Seems the only difference is how much effort has been made on sharpening the edge. Though I guess the handle being decent could be another factor, but in the instance of the video I was talking about, the handles were almost identical.

When I went shopping for a decent cooking knife, I went for something utterly practical and brought one of the knives my local butchers use on the grounds that if it works for a butcher, it'll be fine for me in my kitchen. For sure, it's got a plastic handle - but it's not going to slip from your hands, it'll last a lifetime and the it's still sharp as hell. Plus it didn't cost a fortune.

expensive peelers are super worth it cause they're really not expensive, expensive knives are only worth it if you know how to take care of and sharpen them, and a nice big chopping board is a must. tea towels just get whatever who cares. another thing that is worth spending on is a pepper grinder, buy a good one once or buy a cheap one every year

bit late to the game but Jamie saying you could cut your finger without noticing hit home - I bought a chefs knife and used it fine for three months until I was sleepy one night and cutting a cauliflower. Long story short my finger is intact but it took about 3 more months for my nail to grow back! No blood or permanent damage thank god!

This might sound snobbish but I wouldn't ever recommend buying a bamboo cutting board. It doesn't need to be super fancy or expensive, but bamboo boards have a tendency to splinter and they soak up liquid and they just aren't nice to handle.
If you are on a budget and you need a new board, take plastic over bamboo.

As someone that's still grating carrots on a box grater that's older than I am, I find it hard to believe a microplane will last longer.
. but as someone that has never used the finer 2 sides of a box grater, I guess I'm not in the home-cook side of things.

At 11: 22 says that he would pick the middle price knife, but is holding a Wusthof (which I believe was the high price one. Was that a mistake? Did he meant to say that he picks the most expensive one? Or is there 2 Wusthof knifes there where one is bigger?

honestly for chopping boards id almost always go for a plastic one with some rubber pads on the bottom to stop it slipping. Wooden boards are just unwieldy and a pain to clean.
Plus having different colour boards for meat and veg is handy.

I have a Mercer 10 serrated bread knife that is, no question, the sharpest, best balanced, most comfortable knife in my kitchen. I paid 12. 99 for it. If I ever need to replace any knife, the new one will be a Mercer.

I hate graters. On my 25th birthday 7 years ago I decided to never use one again. If I want shit sliced I use a knife. If something needs to be powder that isn't already a powder, then I don't need that shit.
