Making Extreme Artistic Choices - Caricature Critiques When it comes to drawing caricatures, knowing how to push your exaggerations to the extreme can really help you with design choices in your piece. In this critique, we-ll use a student-s caricature of Elijah Wood to talk about the importance of pushing your third caricature sketch to the limits. Remember, the point of this exercise is to give you permission to exaggerate in steps. The second caricature of your first caricature is to push the exaggerations a bit without trying to lose likeness. The 3rd caricature of a caricature is for pushing your exaggeration choices as far as you can take them, even if you lose the likeness of the subject. Want more student critiques? It is amazing how music and art overlap, conceptually. When practicing something like a Bach violin sonata, the greats will rehearse by over-exaggerating the dynamics and tempo changes, then dial it back for the final performance.
