There's an article on defoliation overcompensation, where removing much (or ALL) of the leaves on various plants can sometimes trigger MASSIVE overcompensation in crops, as well as other benefits- aphid resistance, drought tolerance, etc. The study mainly focuses on corn, but has references to other studies on potatoes and radishes benefiting as well. It reminds me of the deep bury in a bucket method of potato growing, it SHOULDN'T work because the potato is disadvantaged in making greens- but clearly (as you well know) the crop does gangbusters! I was just wondering, since you were an experimenter, if you might try some of this out?

I love Brussel Sprouts, but that's probably because my mum only lightly steamed them, so they still had some crunch and flavour. Most modern cultivars have a totally different taste tho the ones you hated as a child, they're sweeter and taste amazing roasted. I'm on the East coast of Scotland, where it can be really cold with the wind blowing down from the arctic circle, so it's perfect for Sprouts. I grew my own Christmas dinner veg last year - Sprouts, red cabage and Sarpo Mira potatoes, which are a great red-skinned al-rounder. They made fabulous Pomme Dauphinoise.

Good overview, done similar only with kale and I can't eat it all off a half doz planted in late fall/early winter, zone 9a, the light frosts don't faze 'em.
Avoid flushing off aphid eating bugs esp Ladybugs, seeing them around a lot so far this spring. on my artichokes they control earwigs (eat the eggs, the only bug prob I have with chokes. I use virtually zero poisons, dilute soapy water to flush earwigs out of choke pedals then rinse, at worse.
I can't do coverings other than a few nights per yr for frost, gardens have to be attractive to MY EYE.

Thank you for all your great info. Love your Chanel very knowledgeable and tranquil at moments. Thank you love the new place and setup. Just awesome. Sorry this is so long and out of the subject but I dont know how to use this stuff much so couldnt send message. But my question is what are your thoughts on persimilis? The predatory mites. I see and hear very good feed back. But I am very interested in your thoughts on them? Thank you. Blessings.

For aphids; a simple soap and water solution is great to kill them (few drops of soap into a spray bottle works. The soap affects the water surface tension which will coat the aphid and suffocate it. Aphids get air from tubes in their thorax, like most insects; instead of breathing, like mammals.
Soap will rinse off after the next rain shower or when you rinse the veges before eating. Been using it for years, never had an ill effect.

Just ordered my first set of 6 cells! My wife and I have been watching for over a year with our morning coffee and are finally making moves in the backyard. Thank you Kevin and team for all of your hard work. You are truly inspiring.

Brussel sprouts have been bred to have less of the strong taste/smell that they are famous for, making them more palatable to a larger number of consumers. There are still a lot of people that have an adversion to them because their taste buds react to some of the chemicals in the Brussel sprout making them taste inedible. So glad that's not me

Thanks so very much, Epic Gardening, for this information! I'm in zone 7b. Year 2023 will be my first time trying to grow my own B. Sprouts. Start seeds mid to late winter (Jan-Feb 2023) Indoors then transplant outdoors in early spring (spring begins: March 20, 2023. Is this plan correct? Thanks again. o/ From VA

I have been watching you for a quite a bit now and you kinda convinced me to have a garden, so this last October my Dad and I built two large garden boxes in the backyard. I'm excited for this summer in Utah. Because now I get to put my knowledge to the test, and will show some of our viewers around our garden too!

I like this guy because he knows everyone in the world doesnt live in his growing zone so all of his tips dont necessarily apply to everyone, for example a guy called millennial gardener thinks everyone watching lives in his growing zone, completely oblivious to the fact that climate isnt the same everywhere

Last year, mine did not form tightly. The sprouts stayed leafy. Maybe the summer heat here in Indiana? I pruned mine pretty heavily trying to get the energy to the sprouts. Also, I used my 2 lopper to cut the stalk off. I have some nice compost ready for them this year. Thanks for the video!

Um. something I'm struggling with is knowing what size seedlings are supposed to be week by week. if they're too small for the growing period. I just don't know and miss replanting for a fall crop. on the line of 8A and 8B. This kind of applies to most of what I start in the house.

Place on a roasting pan add salt pepper and nutmeg then lay a few slices of bacon over them and roast for about 15 min or until as done as you like them. This gives them a good crunch on the outside and a delicious flavor! My daughter told me last time that i didn't make enough lol

I only had one I had started from seed to survive, and it didn't produce any sprouts all its first year. I left it in the garden through the winter and now it's very tall and bushy and it has bolted. Can I save it? I've never grown them before. Tia!
