Grab a GreenStalk: - If you're a small-space apartment or balcony gardener, growing vertically is your best friend. You'll get WAY more yield out of the same square footage. These three planting ideas are tested by us over multiple season and proven to perform extremely well

Ive planted red and yellow onions in my green stalks.
Its not complete failure but bulbs did not develop well. Although leaves and stems grew so think. Probably more to do with not enough or too much plant food and hot winter(Dry LA weather) And I had Black aphids infestation. Also Noticed that higher top 3 layers grew better than bottom 2 layer. It was amazing how much roots were developed in soil. Almost too packed with roots that may be not enough soil for onions
Next time if I do onions, I will just put it on every other pocket and only top 3 layers.
Bottom layers got more aphids than top.
Its hard to feed plant on tower. Whenever I give them fish &kelp water, Aphids or bug goes crazy over it.
Still experimenting with this tower. But I think strawberry is better idea than onions.

I have two 7-tier green stalks and they're great! Last year we grew strawberries BUT we didn't protect them through the winter (zone 6) and unfortunately all but one of the strawberry plants died. We have some in-ground strawberry plants, so I'm hoping we can save enough runners this year to fill up our towers again next year. I have noticed that we have so many more pest problems with in-ground strawberries than in the towers, so I think that is an added reason to use the towers. I just can't seem to get any ripe in-ground strawberries before the bunnies, chipmunks, squirrels, and birds. This year I've filled the towers with flowers for the pollinators.

Im hoping to put two green stalks in my garden eventually. I have so much to do and thats sort of in the tale end of my list. The expansion is so big I have to break it up. Id say 80% was done this year. Fence expansion tripling my space, replacement of all raised beds to be metal, two new trellises, blueberries, apples, a memorial garden/pollinator habitat, and so much mulchI have another trellis, 6 raised beds and a greenhouse to get in over this fall/winter. Hoping to finally just plant and maintain next spring. Fingers crossed. So much learning, so much work but its so rewarding and looking exactly how I imagined.

I have 5 originals and 1 leaf and 2 towers I made out of a 32 gal tall trash can with holes made by a holesaw and a pvc pipe in the middle for water and feeding. All did fantastic for bush beans last year. I also got a decent yield for small saldette and cherrry tomatoes and jalepeno peppers as well as several herbs. My petunias and nasturtium did well in them too. I am switching from spring to summer plants in them now but the Swiss chard did outstanding and the spinach, brocolli rabe and asian cabbage did well too. Love these planters.

I have 3 strawberry towers (Greenstalks, 1 lettuce tower, 1 spinach tower (fantastic, 1 bean tower, 1 pea tower, 2 flora entrance towers, and 1 greens tower. I LOVE them so much - not enough sun to grow in-ground and these are way easier to harvest, plant, upkeep few weeks, look over to destroy the bad bugs, keeps rabbits and deer away, and did I mention easy to water, weed, work? I succession plant and always have delicious fresh salad makings and 'treats' to eat while in the garden - sugar snaps, strawberries, spinach, etc. AWESOME!

I love my green stalks. i bought ONE last yr. reg one deep pocket grew so much greens last year.
Bought the leaf planter this year which has my greens and pok choy. still a green.
But in my deep pocket one I planted sprouting broccoli and cabbage. 6 inch smaller head ones and they are doing great. harvesting the broccoli regularly and 2 heads so far of cabbage. im doing beans after the cold weather crops are done. love them!

First year using green stalk. Love them. Here are some things I dont think Ill grow again in them: dun peas- too bushy and hard to fiddle with keeping them off other plants above, radishes/turnips- just not enough space to grow and let their greens flourish, English lavender- too hard to control the amount of water it gets vs the other cells above or below. But absolutely recommended for so many other things!

Off-topic, but Kevin, how big a grow bag would you recommend for indeterminate tomatoes? Any difference for cherry vs full-size tomatoes, both indeterminate? I'm looking at either 7 or 10 gallon bags. Same question for indeterminate cukes? Thanks!
Maybe, you could do a video on pot/grow bag size recommendations for fruiting vegetables (tomatoes, cukes, squash, etc)

Oh a big question for u. I live in and apartment with no balcony and of course no garden. I have always wanted to grow veggies. These are great ideas but would grow lights work. I live on the 3 floor in MD. I only get 3 hours of evening Sun. I should also add that currently i over 200+ plants in my apartment so not even sure what would work best for me actually

Wow, it's like you're speaking directly to me and about me. I have two greenstalk towers. One is exclusively for strawberries, and the other is for leafy greens, and in the summer I switch out the lettuces for beans and my favorite dwarf tomato, the tiny Tim. I bought the towers with lettuce and strawberries in mind, it's so great to grow them off the ground.

I gifted my labmate the original deeper celled ones (her ex is refusing to return it to her post-divorce ) and she straight up grew squash, cucumbers and peppers in it. It was amazing when it was covered on greenery and her 2 kids LOOOOVED it. I wish she could have it back cuz I guess her ex is leaving it to the wayside and the kids miss gardening in it a lot.

Man, I really wanna get one of these sometime. I'm at work for a lot of the peak daytime hours a lot of the time, so it would be insanely cool to have one of these with a built in motor in the base to rotate, then a timer, so the tower could self-rotate and still give all the plants plenty of light, even if you can't be there! A fella can dream

I recommend getting a common pleco for your pond if your area allows. They clean up algae from the pond and provide nutrients for the plants in the form of fish waste. They are tough and are peaceful towards fish.
Edit: Do not buy from a pet store. Many people are looking to rehome theirs because they are too big for their fish tank.

I have four towers of the vertical deeper pots. I grew green onions, kale, carrots, spinach and currently doing beans. Unfortunately I can not do strawberries as squirrels keep after them. I have containers that hang on fence and we covered with a frame make of pvc pipe and hung netting. Nope, still gets in. Good luck!

I bought my very 1st Greenstalk after watching your video on growing beans. Now I have 6 and I use mine to grow lettuce, beans, strawberries, and misc items to see how they do compared to in my raised beds. I've tried Carrots, Peppers, Cherry Tomatoes, Jalapeno, Serrano peppers, Ancho chili peppers and Swiss Chard.
