3 Years Of Homesteading: What I've Learned

I can't believe it's been 3 years since I bought a small house in suburban San Diego and tried to turn it into a thriving homestead. Here's how it's gone, how the sustainable systems work, and what I've learned along the way. Regarding the grey water system, one concern is that clothing made of synthetic fibers like polyester (the majority of today's clothing will contain some) degrade over time and release micro plastic particles into the laundry water.
The polymers (long and complex chain-like molecules based on carbon) used in clothing are not biodegradable or degrade into harmful products that will get carried away by the laundry water towards your plants.
Did you consider this aspect of gray water?
I personally wouldn't want to release plastic-bearing laundry water into my soil. In my opinion, that dirty water would be better reused by diverting it into the toilet flush tank.
Also, this is a long-term issue that will eventually have some impact on your garden and plants or on your health. In the first years, the effects may not be noticeable, but micro plastics will build up over time in your soil and eventually leak into groundwater resevoirs or end un in your crops.

I ve really enjoyed watching your progress, and I especially enjoy the down to earth, accessible approach and the honesty and integrity that you maintain! I started and maintain a local group for stewardship, sustainability and preparedness, and you are on my list of trusted sources. I teach research and careful sourcing of information about topics related to the ideas we discuss, and it s important to find several different sources you can trust on any subject that you wish to grow your knowledge about. I just had to chuckle about the 24/7 comment! Not even California gets THAT much sunlight! Thanks for being real with your viewers! And thank you for building your team to include others farther north and with different perspectives and experiences. Your work with Jacques and the others has built my respect for you and your output, because you don t treat others with a bristling sense of being threatened, but an inclusive and open attitude. That s significant to me.

Merry Christmas Kevin and Epic crew!
So lovely to see your old place and lets not forget the potato growing on the corner street apartment! You are really the entrepreneur on your Epic journey!
Does anyone know why you can't collect water in Colorado? Is it because of elevation. I know it snows there and has mountains like Utah. I really think that every council should be able to provide a water butt through a grant. I think a lot of water boards in the UK are transferring customers from rates to metered water usage, so they can control the amounts of water being used, especially in droughts.
Is the house made of brick and wood floors?
Anyway, looking forward to seeing the journey in 2024! Good Luck/ break a stem or whatever they say in the gardening community! lol

Thank you, Kevin -- a great video!
Will Epic Gardening be available as an audiobook? I have wanted to read your other books, but as I primary listen to books rather than read physical copies, I haven't been able to as (from what I can tell) they're only available in hard copy and e-reader formats. It would be a great accessibility move and likely pen you up to a new market of readers. :)
Either way, appreciated and enjoyed this update -- particularly the elements about anxiety, mental health, and the impact of the pandemic

Kevin, I have used one of those Bosch mixers for the last 12 years! It is awesome. I, too, grind my own flour in a Komo mill that looks a lot like yours. I buy organic rye and wheat, etc because I have no room to grow it. But making breads is my hobby/stress reducer! I love it. I used to even sell my loaves to neighbors and friends. I think my Bosch might outlive me bc it is not showing any signs of wear. I can make up to 7 loaves at one time in it. And your brioche I d beautiful! I want the recipe. Have a wonderful 2024!

So happy for your set up Kevin and following your fun journey. Fellow San Diegan here. Having to move as they're selling our house we've rented for 7 years. A bit bummed at having to dig up my garden but also excited to start a new one at our new place (hope we get many years out of this one. One that I can set up better now that I know what worked well and worked not so well at my current place. What are the odds transplanting mature kale and broccoli plants work out? I give myself a 20% success rate! Guess I'll see.

SO inspiring! Its wild whenever you do look back videos to see how far you've come, it goes by so fast when watching it all in real time but you should be so proud! I really want to start a rain capture situation like the one you have right off the house - 200 gallons I think you said? But I don't know what brand yours is, will have to go re-watch the related videos. I'm in Oakland, CA hopefully I can find some help setting one up here!

Around 20: 20 you re talking about your composing system Here s my question which I ve never seen actuated. How do you get the composted matter (the quasi dirt) from bin 1 to bin 2 and bin 2 to bin 3, etc. and if you are continually adding to bin 1, what are you moving over to bin 2? I would love it if you could not only explain but show the process please.

Thanks for sharing your journey with homesteading over the past 3 years. I look forward to seeing what s next. Do you still have worms? I remember in the old place you had a unique worm bin but I haven t seen it recently. FYI, I love my epic 4 and 6 cell seed starting containers as well as the new and improved grow bags.

LOL hey I'm up here in Riverside if you help me with transforming my 1. 4 acres into a homestead I'll help you insulate your house.
Our house was built in 39 and when we purchased it they had upgraded it but they did not insulate the walls so we had to go ahead and do that ourselves with a leaf vacuum and a long hose.

Loved the vid. I've been following you for a while now, and you've inspired me to start some suburban style homesteading, back in Australia. I'm at the very beginning of my journey, and have included it in my vlogs, so hopefully one day, I cal look back at how far I've come. Your cooking was enpoint! Mmm mmm. :)

Hi Kevin! I just wanted to send you a note to let you know how much I appreciate what you said about anxiety and burnout. Every time someone shares their own experience with mental illness, it helps to chip away at the stigma attached. Thank you for playing a small part in making the world a better place

Love all of this, great recap and can't wait to see what else you do on property!
Random question. with regular clothing being alot of polyester. using wash water on a regular basis, is there a build up of microplsdtics at all? Is that even something that can be measured?

What happens if there is a hal storm and it completely destroys you solar panels? We had a ice storm in 2000. We had no electricity in our county for 38 days. We did just fine without it. I have a 120 ft well so I don't have to capture rain water nature does it for me.
reply

Using a gray water system doesn't seem any more gross than using animal parts for compost! The worms and bugs will take care and do the work, while the plants will soak up what they need. It's really a beautiful thing if you think about it in the bigger scheme of nature
