I like this type of video where you rate the different types of veggies. I am not saying this because I bought the seeds from Botanical Interests but I tried Brentwood, New Red Fire, and Marvel of Four Seasons and fell in love. I have always grown Little Gem and it was my standard go to lettuce, until I tried Marvel of Four Seasons. I live in Upstate SC and always struggled with the awful heat and humidity of the south here so lettuce was not a Summer success. Once I tried Marvel of Four Seasons that was a game changer for me! I grew mine in my garden tower and would start at the bottom and sew seeds in the pockets and thin to the strongest one weeks later. I would succession sew a pocket above the previous one sewn at the 2-3 week mark and keep lettuce coming all Summer long. That lettuce is the bomb! It is crunchy and sweet, even in the horrid heat and kept producing for me all the way until Winter. It is an amazing variety and I will always grow it in my garden from now on. I also like Speckled Trout and Red Sails. I really jumped on the red type varieties and found I like them a lot. Can't wait to see your next side by side comparison videos.

At 3 minutes, I didn't hear a word you said bcuz I was mesmerized by all the wrong kinds of greens.
Soooo many off subject thoughts.
I kept wondering why the door and window on your house is green
I'm assuming it's a sun block kinda thing
Inside, does it make that room look green too
I've just never seen a door like that.
Do you like having the room that color of green
Does it sometimes seem erie in that room
But then I saw the door & window were almost the same color green as the plant tags.
And your sweat shirt is green too.
Then I noticed the water tank is green.
I was seeing all the greens!
Except the lettuce.
I never had time to look at the lettuce.
Which I'm assuming had some green in them.
Yeah, it was a whole green thing.

we are farmers who sell at farmers market. Everyone who tried Ice Queen aka Reine des Glace said that its the best tasting lettuce. They can't get enough of. Reine des Glaces is a French heirloom. Relatively easy to grow Don't suffer much of tip burn, hold well in fridge. The other variety people like are buttercrunch and Pirat, a German heirloom. Pirat also has superior taste and texture comparable to reine des Glaces. We dropped Salanova due to its lackluster taste and texture. Positive for Salanova is that it is one of the easiest lettuce to grow. For a beginner, salanova may be a descent choice. Just use high quality and tasty dressing to make up for the lackluster taste.

Yes taste is important but there is more to a variety than just flavor. Certain varieties will do better under a gardner's regional and seasonal conditions. For example Black Seeded Simpson is a very fast robust grower that can be very productive in the short northern days of winter, but almost useless to grow in the heat of summer as it tends to go to seed quickly. It may not be the tastiest variety, and if grown under the wrong conditions you would wonder why anyone would bother, but if you are truly trying for self sufficiency a winter variety like this is irreplaceable.

Throw the lettuce into the refrigerator for 24 hours and it knocks the bitterness out of lettuce. The bitterness is the sunblock defense mechanism the lettuce plants have. You can either harvest VERY early in the morning after they cooled down overnight, or do what I already said, harvest and throw into the fridge for 24 hours. Prizehead is my absolute favorite, with Black Seeded Simpson being my #2, but I grow a variety so it's never just one type in a salad or on top of tacos.

Planting some Marvel of the 4 Seasons today. You guys should really do a vid or two on dealing with digging pests like raccoons and skunks. The skunks dig up my mulched back yard every night and were trashing my beds on a regular basis until I installed bird netting covers on all of them. But they're really inconvenient for maintenance. Maybe your team has some genius ideas for keeping these four-legged bandits from digging everything up.

I really prefer dark greens with strong flavor, so my faves are tatsoi, kale, and spinach. Did grow some butter crunch last year. ate some but in the end I just let it bolt and get about 3' tall. I will be planting the free lettuce blend Botanical Interest put in my order, and another free lettuce blend another provider sent with an order, just because. Worst case scenario, I'm giving greens to my parents and neighbors.

I personally like hearty greens over lettuce. I grew endive and truchas last year because they are pretty and truchas for cuteness. I didn’t eat. The truchas bolted and looked pretty. I prefer dark greens, bitter flavor like dandelion and radicchio. I add chopped red and green cabbage to my salads too. I would rather have a kale or broccoli leaf than a lettuce leaf. Good video though for people who eat lettuce.

The thing is a lot of these lettuces have different uses culinarily. take that dino lettuce for example, the extra chewiness might lend it better to a grilled Cobb salad or the link. Like Kevin said, the frillier lettuces hold more dressing, and if really want to make a salad better just mix the types together and it's always better than a monotype salad!

I might say you omitted Coastal Star romaine, arguably the lettuce people think of when they think of romaine. Sort of like the Marketmore 76 slicer cucumber, Coastal Star is a lettuce you might find in any grocery store in the US. Its still a PVP patented variety, so that is a consideration for some folks. But its a very good romaine!

I would love to see one for carrots, from the smallest to largest varieties and you have to taste test those as well! I am looking for the perfect carrot that tastes sweet and stores well, but still haven't found the ONE! Thanks for all your videos. I always learn something and you both make me laugh out loud! Keep it up!

Xingtai is meant to be eaten cooked. I've never eaten celtuce raw really. Cooking it by blanching or stir frying tempers the bitterness a lot and the mouth feel is a lot better. Not a lot of Asian veggies are meant to be eaten raw. We cultivated it to hold up to stir frying in a wok. Hence the fleshiness.

I harvested one whole row of lettuce ( is no dig system, so my question is about the beds after I harvest the lettuce, what is the best way to manage the soil Should I wait before I plant something else, Should I put more compost on the top and plant right away. How to manage the beds the best way.

15 years ago, I worked as a server in a very fancy farm-to-table restaurant in Berkeley. We sold a little gem salad that was just lettuce, carrots and radishes with a vinegarette. That thing was $15. People would complain about how much the salad was but everyone who actually ordered it loved it.

Thanks for this video I really enjoyed it and it helped me decide which varieties I will grow. Regarding the Sluugo, I know slugs are a huge problem when growing lettuce, but I read somewhere that even The Monterey Sluggo affected earthworms negatively. Would you know anything about that

The xingtai/celtuce should be cooked or stir fried. I wouldn't recommend it raw. The stem is great in gong bao ji ding/kung pao chicken or just stir fried with garlic and a little salt. Plant early and harvest before it gets hot or else it will get bitter. Peel off the hard skin, then cook.

I have a 4' by 4' raised bed. A couple of months ago (it was already warm enough here in FL) I planted each quad with a different leaf lettuce. I now have a solid mass of 16 square feet of leaf lettuce! It's solid lettuce; no space in between. I could feed the whole block with this!

I bought butter crunch after this. I am very excited to try it.
I can’t remember where I heard this tip, but recently someone said when you harvest lettuce to soak it in really cold water before bagging it. None of my lettuce has ever been very crunchy right off the plant.

The UK Little Gem looks different. It's a tight head like a cabbage. We slice in half or quarters and grill it. It would be fab on the Blackstone.
I love this style of tiers. We need more videos like this. Next one has got to be Kevin's Ultimate Potato Tiers!

I'm not sure if anyone else noticed, but I have to ask.
What happened to Red Sails on the tier list
First it went into B tier as an A-, and then it disappeared from the list altogether.
Love the videos by the way, very educational and entertaining!
