DIY Water Bottle Hydroponic System for Propagating and Herbs

Learning how to make a hydroponic system doesn't have to be hard - in fact, this is barely a tutorial at all! I used heavy duty 1 net pots from my friend CZ Garden, who sponsored this video, to make the simplest repurposed water bottle kratky system that I could imagine. It's perfect for propagating, growing herbs, or taking cuttings of your houseplants. Better yet, these little net pots are so cheap that you're only limited by your creativity. DIY cloning systems with these would be a breeze to make

So, I bought some of these because. adorable. And now I am wondering how to actually make them practical. I have a square plastic basket that holds 24 water bottles perfectly, and now they all have little net cups in them, and they're a regular little army of potential plant growers. I'm thinking about sticking a chunk of rock wool in the cups and starting tomato seeds or something. Maybe not the most efficient, but another way to repurpose all the plastic bottles that stack up, and use their powers for good. I think the air pruning of the seedlings will be beneficial, and I'll plunk the whole root/rock wool mass into the bed when it comes time to transplant. Can't hurt to give it a try, eh? Thanks for your videos!

I should have asked this week's ago. Lollllllllllllllllllllllll! I know nada about plants. We did these in my classroom. What do we do once they have roots! Lol. Do we just plant them like this, or do we cut them out and plant them? Do they stay in the bottles? (Ahhhhhh) Help! :) FYI, they loved this!

Epic Gardening
glass jars work alot better as they have more weight which means you can grow a bigger plant
cotton balls could work out alot better than the coco mix as medium, just found a similar type on ebay seem quite useful for propagation to harvest

I been experimenting with cotton balls for starting seeds.
Place them in q little net pot,
Insert my seeds, wet the cotton and place in sealed container.
So that way I just pop in my reservoir and plants good to go.
Way cheaper than rockwool.

Use slightly larger bottle and there is no need to cut top off. 1 liter water bottles, up to 64 oz juice bottles, and even 1 gallon bottles, fit perfect with no need to cut top off. I also take 1 rockwool cube and cut into quarters, great fit.

So, $13 for 100! of those net pots is pretty dope. I was going to write a comment about just using old k cups from the ladies at work and my mother's house, but, now I think i'll just buy some!

Thank you for the great video. I am going to use this with a gardening club during virtual learning. It would be great if you had a follow-up video of how it grows and the next transition.

Wow! Amazing ideas. Always love your videos.
Have a lot of soda bottles, fruits packaging laying around the house. Will use them to grow many plants in high rise.

Nice, CZ 1 is my go-to. I cut 1. 5 rockwool in 1/4's. I do it more for cost savings. Funny, I tried to seed something in coco. packed it too tight, will try again.

waste of money and plastic, you can literally achieve the same results just sticking it in a glass of water then planting it in your garden when it has roots
reply

would this work without the soil? can you have the cutting hanging just above the water and allow it to evaporate straight onto the suspended cutting?
reply

Can we just put aluminum foil to cover the water. Will this also help in making ng water stay a little bit cool when expose in sun
