How to Use a Humidifier for Your Houseplants

Tropical indoor houseplants need more humidity than we give them, especially in the colder months. The solution is to use a humidifier for plants, so here are a few recommendations on how to set one up, where to place it, as well as the one I think is the best cool mist humidifier for the money. I set the humidistat on mine to about 50%. With that setting, mine runs for DAYS without needing to be refilled

Really happy I came across your video! I read your blog post before about the best humidifiers, and I purchased this exact humidifier last week. My one question would be, is it ok that the mist cascades down onto my plants or is it better to just have the mist directed slightly away from them? I worry about mold and such saying as Im already putting more moisture into the air. I cant find any resources online about this matter, although upon searching for this answer I came across your blog which in turn led me to your video so Im definitely going to be watching more of yours! :) thanks so much for the information!
Side note for anyone considering buying this humidifier: do it! Its a great price point and its one of the best investment Ive made for my plants.

Love this, although I do recommend buying a cheap small humidity monitor that you can keep near your plants, if a single humidifier (with its own monitor) is humidifying an entire room. That way, you can get accurate measurements of the humidity in various areas of a space, rather than what the humidifier itself is measuring, which is the air immediately surrounding the humidifier.
For instance, if a humidifer is on the south side of a room, and an AC or heating duct is on the north side of a room, the humidity that the humidifier reports might be greater than the humidity on the north side, since your AC system might be moving air and keeping that more distant area dryer. Etc.

How long do you keep your humidifier running? I actually used one that we already had for colds and put my plants in our bathroom. Its a warm mist one and doesnt have any features, its that simple of a machine. But it filled up the bathroom pretty well!
Would putting my plants in the bathroom and then taking them out negatively affect them? I just cant fit them all in there all the time: /

Hey plant lovers the new Taotronic humidifier on amazon is top loading for easy refill
I live on the West Coast of Canada so my humidity level is naturally high in the warm months but now with the heat its dropped drastically: (
Also I use rain water
No build up & probably better for the plants.
Thanks for the helpful video

Anyone else with forced heat have an issue with water from humidifiers getting into the furnace and causing issues? I tried having a humidifier and Everytime I ran it and got humidity near 50 my furnace would stop working. Found out it was because the water vapor got into a tube which causes furnace to stop running and code out.

I'm a biotech engineering student studying thermodynamics and chemical processes and shit and you dead-ass explained the whole relative humidity vs temperature thing SO good so that those who don't know it will understand. Really like that you could phrase it so logically because I've often failed to do so! :)

Thank you for reading my mind.
My question is this: in relation to the plants, do you place the humidifier below them (on tray on floor, level with them, or above them (on shelf with plants below. I use a Crane Penguin. I think I'm going to invest in one that can do what yours does, though.

Ive ordered three Nepenthes and they need humidity and I want to buy a humidifier. I found this program extremely interesting, but Im not sure which one to buy. I liked the one being demonstrated but couldnt catch the name and Im in Australia and need the name of one suitable to buy here.

I have a Calathea right now that is a tropical plant that needs to be in a high humidity environment. Recently, I bought a humidifier for it but I am not quite sure how far should the humidifier be from the plant and the pot seems to be wet because of the humidifier, any tips about it?

i recently got a nephrolepis fern, and have been struggling to keep it alive, the dirt dries out really fast, but the leaves have brown spots, i know about the air humidifier but i have a lot of self made wood shelfs, any tips or other vids that might help? (and yes its my first plant)

You mentioned not to put it next to walls or wood, but what about my plants? Obviously I don't want to rot the leaves or cause any kind of mold. How far away should plants be to be safe and does cool mist or warm mist help prevent this any better or worse? Thank you for your time!

The best humidifier I ever had was a 35 gallon fresh water fish tank.
It kept the humidity stable and had the advantage of providing nutrient-rich water for houseplants when I changed some of the water in the tank. The fish were happy; the plants were happy; and I was happy.

Do you notice this brand humidifier getting stuck? I got 1. But the rH% will get stuck while my sensors show higher RH. then boom it realizes it too high. Shuts off
And same there. Sometimes stays off too long. Realizes wayyyyy to late how low it is. Kicks on.

I have the same humidifier. Works great! I live in edmonton alberta in canada, are winters are cold and DRY. I fill this bad boy up and let er run at 35% till its empty. My plants seem to like it, I dont get nose bleeds at night, and my cat has less dander. Triple win

But what to do if your home has wood floor?
Also another question is how wide of an area does the humidifier work? Do you need multiple if you have a lot of plants or a big plant room?
Also I find that the humidity percent is often wrong displayed on the screen
