Harvesting kale can be done one of two ways: a cut and come again style where you only remove the largest leaves, allowing the plant to grow, and removing the entire plant (as I do Vikki: I am in zone 9b, my kale has been growing for over a year now. and today i noticed it was flowering on the tops. ive grown many different kids of kale and even this same type and have never had flowering before. any advice on what to do next. today i cut off most of the flowering tips in hopes of delaying losing these plant altogether. i picked a bunch and will store until the last moment. of course I also made kale chips and soup with the other kale. can i keep letting it grow even if it flowering? or should i just pull it out now? i will let a few flower so i can collect seeds.

I copied a Kale Salad that I had at Jimbo's. Dino Kale, green onions, red cabbage finely sliced. Carrots large grate. They used dried cranberries and pumpkin seeds but I like raisins and sunflower seeds. Easy dressing is apple cider vinegar, whole grain mustard and a little vegan mayo spread. Just the kale, green onions, red cabbage and carrot keeps covered very well in the refrigerator and then add the others as you eat it.

If you had chickens, they would probably eat your kale stems; but, when I make kale chips, I try to leave the leaf as whole as possible. I just use my dehydrator to make my kale chips. They are plain, so no oil or seasons. I keep them in a clamp jar and use them crumbled up in soups and stews. I even crush the kale up in scrambled eggs. Any food where you could use dried parsley, you can use dried kale.

I noticed your comment about leaving roots in the ground. I am new to gardening. Do you recommend doing this with all plants? I just harvested some cauliflower and cabbage today and was going to plant some new seeds in the garden in their place. Should I leave the root in the ground even though I will plant a new seed there? Thank you!

Good video! I will have to try the chips recipe. btw: You can easily shorten the ammount of time needed to get rid of the stems by putten the stem in the hole at the bottom end of a ladle and just pull the stem through, all the curly leaves will fall of. I've learned this trick myself from my neighbour in our previous home.

Use a dehydrator and you need no oil and it never burns. So delish. Your kale looks gorgeous. Mine grow as weird looking trees bc I grab leaves most days.
My recipe: mix in blender 1 red pepper, 1/4 c nutritional yeast, 1 lemon, salt. Toss with kale, throw into dehydrator. soooooo gooooood

No expert, but sharing a couple things I observed with kale: 1. In a REALLY small garden space, I'm going to rethink planting kale and trade up/prioritize those that are most costly to buy, and 2. you can save the arduous knife work and simply slide the leaves off the stalk from the top down. :)

I admit I rolled my eyes when you talked about your pruners. Lol I just realized I own the same pair. I had bought them because they were rated highly.
For the last 2 years I'm been wanting a tool belt because I always forget my small items. Will your garden apron fit a tiny hand shovel?

I like mine in smoothies! My kale is still going strong in 95 degrees. I actually harvest some of the new leaves from the middle but not all of them. Theyre more tender and tastier. I will try kale chips again though. Glad to hear you keep the roots in the soil, making worms happy! Thanks!

Here in Wisconsin I've found that it doesn't get quite hot enough to really affect the flavor of kale. Not the varieties I've planted in the past couple years, anyway. I usually harvest it all season long, but I get that the weather here is WAY different from there in San Diego!

Hi Kevin many thanks for your informative video. We appreciate your time and information. I use kale & spinach in smoothies very good for my eye sight. I have big problem with pest on my leaves white spots and some yellow circles. How do I get manage my problem. Many thanks

I cant get enough kale chips - I grew the Dazzling Blue variety of kale this year and love how flat they lay in a dehydrator. This probably makes it a lot less healthy but I bought some of Anthonys Cheddar Cheese powder on Amazon and its frickin bomb on kale chips

I've never grown kale and to be honest with you hardly ever eaten it. What does it taste like? What do the kale chips taste like? I eat spinach, greens (collards, mustard) broccoli etc, I just haven't been into kale? Also what's it's nutritional value?

Growing up in Germany, I had a lot of kale, usually in combination with diced potatoes and sausage. I never had kale chips until a couple of years ago. I love them now. Especially with some heat from some pepper flakes and maybe some cumin or chili powder.
