Please everyone if youre going g to plant milkweed. You have to plant several plants or when the monarchs lay eggs and they hatch. Theyll eat all the milkweed in one plant and starve to death within 2 days if they dont have any milkweed to feed on. Monarchs do not eat milkweed. Their larvae does.
Each monarch caterpillars from egg to chrysalis will eat a minimum of 20 -30 small leaves or 10 huge leaves! I learned the hard way. I was lucky enough to find a roadside filed with milkweed if the same type and was able to release my caterpillars when they wiped out my milkweed garden.
Now I planted 15 huge milkweed plants 2 years ago and they spread to about 30 huge plants and there is more than enough for all my caterpillars. Keep the same kind of milkweed plant. The caterpillars may refuse to switch milkweed plants of different types. I experienced that as well.
Black swallowtail larvae eat Rue, parsley, carrot type species and basil. Sometimes fennel. But whatever you do, please plant enough until the end of their cycle or they will starve to death. Wild violets which most people think are the most horrible weed
Actually feed Fritillary butterfly larvae and thats all they can eat. When we kill it, they can go extinct in certain areas of heavy development sadly. What I do. Is take all my wild violets and transplant them to a wooden box garden and keep all the edges trimmed so they cant spread to my lawn or other areas. Plus its nice to keep the caterpillars in a protected area from weed whacker and lawn mower work. Im leaning about more butterfly larvae plants so I can help out earth produce 1000s of more butterflies before theyre gone forever. Development has wiped out so many its heartbreaking. Good luck to everyone on their garden growing and always check what the caterpillars or little larvaes are before killing them. You Amy be killing a beneficial pollinator. Lady bug larvae is important too and you would thinks its a bad insect if you dont identify it first. Its a little black and orange fast crawling aphid eating machine. So always identify before killing anything on your plants

I really enjoyed the video. But I want to say it would be important to mention that the choice of which flowers to plant really depends on your country and area. Local plants are always the better choice, because many animals specialise on the plants native to their region. A lot of people import and many exotic plants look really nice, but are rather invasive in the wrong area and don't feed all those specialised pollinators (a lot of wild bees do in fact only visit a small list of plants, some only visit a single type, so you can have beautiful exotic flowers in your garden that end up feeding nothing and potentially spread and replace the local flora that the pollinators actually rely on)
So, I really enjoyed the video, but I hope everyone knows that instead of taking this as recommendations, depending on where they live it is better treated as inspiration to find beautiful local plants that offer the same benefits: ) Lovely though and I have never heard of milkweed before, living in northern Europe, so now I'm gonna go read up on monarch butterflies and then hummingbirds, because oh my god I wish we had those here

This is great, very informative. I need more pollinators in my veg garden bed. I plant flowers in my front yard and in planters but havent mixed them into my veg bed. I need to do that so thank you for the information. If I wanted to plant 3 pollinator plants for my cucumbers and tomatoes, which 3 should I get? I have no trouble with green beans, both the bush bean and the yard long green beans and get huge harvests. But not so much for the tomatoes and cucumbers.

I don'' understand, at all, this American trend (I don't see it anywhere else) of putting wood chips in the alleys and pathways, and NOT on the garden beds where they're desperately needed to prevent evaporation, especially in your San Diego climate. You put compost on those beds, which is awful as a mulch because it drains water like crazy, from its grainy texture and its black color. It means you're wasting water. Why do this? I don't get it.

Some great ideas there Kevin! I find that herbs are often one of the best pollinator magnets. Sage in particular puts on an immense show and seems to draw in all the bees. Anything from the mint family, thyme, rosemary, oregano, chives etc. We get to eat and so do the bugs: )

English people know milkweed as Swan Plant from the shape of the seed pod you only need to buy one as they seed like crazy for the following year the plants need covering when the caterpillars appear or Mr Birdie will feast at Restaurant Protein very quickly.

Very cool vid! Here in NZ our monarchs eat Swan plants which is a different variety of milkweed with spiky seed pods (sometimes called hairy balls plant ) and white flowers. Our favorite pollinator in marigold definitely trying echinacea this year too

So I have a question for you. I Have white alyssum growing in my front yard but ever since about the 3rd week I planted it it has not grown flowers back. The plant seems to be glowing just fine and green but no flowers. What am I doing wrong?

never had a problem with lack of pollinators. bees love mustard flowers and you can plant them all year long. citrus trees are great for early spring flowers. bees, including bumblebees, and hummingbirds love them.

we have a huge pink echinacea and there is this one butterfly that apparently now basically lives on this plant. Everytime it gets spooked and flutters off it will be back in less than 10 minutes. It's incredibly.

5: 00 California banned the commercial sale of Tropical Milkweed. In Ventura County they are doing two plant giveaways of Narrow-leaf Milkweed. I am not sure if they are doing this in other parts of the state.

Hi! Up here in Nor Cal. Plant hollyhock! Pollinators LIKE NEVER BEFORE! Its been an epic pollinator season thus far. Also Chinese long noodle beans. The bees & hummingbirds wont leave the blossoms alone!

Could you someday do a video on how other bugs affect the garden? Spiders, centipedes, aphids etc, not too in depth just basic this was incredibly helpful, I will be planting some of these next year
