The Ursack is one of the options I've been looking at for BWCA trips. My last trip was 20 years ago, I took a family member with me who insisted on bringing WAY too much food. I had all my food in vaccum sealed bags, and used an army surplus rucksack as my bear bag. My family member who went along on that trip had a large army duffel bag PACKED with everything I told him not to bring. a whole picnic ham, apple pie filling in a plastic tube, summer sausage. Tried to get him to ditch all that before we left because I knew well that not only would it be a burden to carry, but also would make our camp an absolute bear magnet. Needless to say on that trip after three days we ended up cutting our trip short because the bears had gotten all of our food. My food supply lasted all three days. but we figure the bear was conditioned to bags hung up in trees, and the bears in this part of the Boundary Waters are well known camp raiders- this one was aggressive to boot. With the Ursack, I like that I can just hang it to any tree without worry. The other option for me would be the blue 30L barrel with a padlock and attached to a tree with a bike cable lock. Weighs more, but seems a pretty durable option as well.

Thanks for sharing! I have yet to see any bears in the Adirondack Park or Catskill Park, just signs of them. Scat and clawed trees, if I do spot one hopefully it's at a distance! I carry bear spray just in case! That bag of yours is super heavy duty, impressive! I like the Aloksak bags as well, good stuff! Thanks for taking us along! Great pic of that big black bear!

I purchased one a couple years ago and because of all the mixed reviews/testimonials I have been a bit leery on using it and have used it very rarely mostly in the off season, winter/early spring, but after watching this I will be taking it with me on all trips now. Thanks Shawn for sharing.

I'm curious if anyone has experience with odor-proof bags. Dogs can find bodies 2000 years old, I find it a little hard to believe that those bags make any difference at all when you are handling the food at the same time as the bag.
Also, how is that fabric against rodents?

It's not just the bag, the string/rope that secured the bag to the tree, as well as the tree itself have to hold up. And this case, they both did. My preference is still a wet sac hung high off the ground when there are trees available.

That is why Ranger Smith used to say Keep an eye out for the big one wearing the hat and the small one with the bow tie - Remember Yogi Bear and Boo Boo look cute but are just as deadly when it comes to picnic hampers. Cheers Shawn!

Thanks for this great video. I have questions. Why did the bear approach the bag? Smell? Previous experience? Something new as a possible food source near humans? Where are the studies to determine which?

I don't understand how your containers and your food didn't get crushed, especially the egg container. I would have expected everything to be crushed and you'd have a big sloppy mess inside that bag.

interesting I would never of thought of that, putting a food bag down wind and away from camp. shows how British I am. hedgehogs are about as bad as it gets.
