It's really starting to feel like home now that the roof is watertight, the front windows are in and the front gable is closed in. After completing the roof boards and membrane on the east side of the log cabin, I install diagonal boards to the gable end over the front porch. I'm not convinced that this is the final look for the gables but I'll wait until I finish the log features holding up the porch overhang before making that decision. For efficiency, I am spending more time on this cabin sealing air gaps and insulating the walls and roof - 6 in the gables and 10 on the roof. I layout the stone floor under the woodstove using sawn granite from a local quarry. It's not as rustic as random stone but I think it will look great once I finish the wood floor around it and apply split stone to the wall behind the stove. A bat who has been living in the front wall chirps its disapproval as I encourage it to find alternate living arrangements, which will probably be the outhouse. Now that it's September and winter is coming, I need to seal up the rest of the exterior, including the rear gable, the windows and the doors, before other wildlife decide to make the cabin their winter home. I grill the last of the bear meat from last year on the open fire as I prepare my gear for the opening of goose season. Food is abundant at this time of year, including game, mushrooms, berries and all of the produce from the garden. Over the next few weeks, I'll be digging up the root vegetables to store in the cellar, hunting and finishing the exterior of the cabin so September is going to be a very busy month!

Did you draw and submit your own plans to the building department, and how has it been working with the building department with building your log cabin, specifically with things like the non-conventional basement and sited procured logs and lumber? I did a similar build (though it was a stick frame) back in the 1980s, but it was a different world back then. I'm now on 40 acres in North Central WA (right on the U. S. /CA border starting a new project. I have a Woodmizer mill and will be building a small timber framed home. I've been told the building department here is fine with locally milled lumber (no grade stamps, but I know it varies a lot depending on where you are.

The cabin is looking great Shawn. Nice work as always. I like the windows in front. good size and scale, as if you want my opinion, LOL. I did notice, from my viewing perspective the interior of the cabin looked a bit dark through the doorway? . I realize there is a need & balance for light while keeping out the cold in the winter. So my question is, are you planning any more windows? BTW, this is NOT 1% critical, just observational.

Another beautiful video Mr. James, thank you so much. The crowning touch was you standing in the doorway drinking your coffee and relaxing on the bench in front of your beautiful cabin. I know it was hard to leave the other cabin but this one is absolutely beautiful! I love the other cabin but this one I don t have the words. Love seeing Cali retrieve her precious toy, she is so beautiful. Take care, stay safe.

Your cabin is awesome. People wouldn t believe that one man could have built this, especially with hand tools. You must be stoked seeing what you ve created! Most people could never do what you ve done! If I would have taken on this project, I would have to bring a generator & air compressor, along with all my power & air tools. Great job!

I am amazed that all the while that you have been working on building your home, you have not neglected your gardening endeavors of providing the calories needed for the family. I have enjoyed your planning out everything to every little detail. How exciting it has been to follow along. Thank you and your family for sharing life with us.

Good goin Shawn. Should have left the shoty loaded. Bears? I've heard theres cougars in the north now. When I lived in Thunderbay back in the 1970s there was none, but since they seem to have spread. Maybe not so much but never trust a bear as my old pappy used to say.

You've really done an outstanding job, Shawn! To build such a beautiful home for you and your family must be incredibly gratifying and now that the major construction is nearly done, I imagine the peace and harmony of your accomplishment really coming together.

I enjoy watching Shawn s videos greatly but it s impossible for one person to do all this work in such a short period of time. Shawn is ingenious and a very talented man. He certainly knows his craft very well. I just think he utilizes some help from time to time.
