West coast saltwater fishing sucks unless you head down to Baja Mexico or up to Oregon. There are so few estuaries on California coast which means there's nowhere for inshore species to breed. The water never gets warm all summer so they rarely see tropical species.

I've fished in both Cali and Florida. Cali is more about skill and fish size while Florida is more about luck and fish rarity. That said, I prefer Florida even though fishing requires less skill there but I like catching exotic fish.

Calico bass are good fighters and great to eat, too bad he didn't take you out paddy hunting. Hadn't fished with him but we fish the same waters over the last 10 years or so I used to enjoy his fish reports on bloody decks

Right shark also known as the dog shark really good eating low ammonia in them and really easy to fillet and de fin we used to target these species in new Zealand where you find some of the best fish recipes yum yum

I hate those guitarfish (in Australia we have something like that known as banjos. They always make me think its a nice snapper but it just them. Also I caught an eagle ray at 150 pound of the surf.
