Yes. Both claws of a stone crab may be harvested lawfully if they are of legal size. Stone CrabAlthough it is currently lawful to harvest both of a stone crab's claws, this practice leaves the stone crab with few alternatives to defend itself from predators.
Although the crab can still obtain minimal amounts of food with no claws, having one claw (if the other one is harvested) will enable the crab to obtain greater amounts of food in a shorter amount of time. Stone crabs (like other crustaceans) have the ability to grow back their claws, but this process requires a large amount of energy in the form of food.
The quicker the crab can obtain the energy required to molt and grow its lost claw, the sooner this renewable delicacy will have another claw to replace the missing one.

Well, crabbing seems to be a bunch different in flordia then california. We leave the single claw crabs alone or they arnt able to defend themselves.
We also check the pots every day. Its a given.
Dungeness opens this weekend and im ready to go. I prefer using the crab snare instead of the pot or basket.
We work hard at it but usually get our 10 crab limit plus the red rock crabs.
Going to be a great season! I hope!

In your video you state that the claws grow back and that is why the regulations say that you can take both claws. but i am wondering more about that. the claws grow back but do you know how long that takes and how long the crab would be defenseless in its natural habitat since both claws were gone. And would the crab(s) that are left defenseless be eaten and how does it effect the population in your area.

According to the research, the amputated stone crab has 28% death rate with one claw left, and 47% death rate when both claws off. Sorry to see that you cut your finger, be careful when you use a knife.

So you didnt have first aid kit. Should always gauze and rubber band or quick patch small rag and some type of tape. Ive had my cuts as well. Enjoyed the vid thanx!

The law says its ok. But its still a dick move when they only have the one claw. You want the crab to survive now the chances of survival have dropped.

Wow nice crabs but sorry you cut yourself with your knife applying pressure will stop the bleeding and raising your arm up will bring the blood flow to a stop.

How is the crab going to protect itself if you remove both claws. Seems a little unfeeling your part. Just because you can doesn't mean you have to!
