Mackerel Fishing and Hauling Lobster Pots - Sea Fishing Cornwall - The Fish Locker

The Mackerel fishing this year has been very patchy with the mackerel taking their time to appear in numbers, so I made sure I capitalised on their appearance in Falmouth. Also stopping to check what was in the homemade Lobster pots. Big chunky Mackerel, edible crabs, spider crabs and lobster. Natures bounty!

Thumbs up as usual John. Mackerel are one of my wifes' favourite fish, unfortunately we can't get fresh mackerel over here. Spanish mackerel and slimy Mackerel seem to be the go. My favourite eating fish and probably the most versatile fish in the sea is the herring. We are spoilt for choice of fish in Aus. But I miss those two in particular. Just noticed that your feathers are a lot smaller than what I used over there, however, mackerel are greedy buggers and will take a bare hook in a big shoal. Have you ever used pollack feathers? I know you have used lure but can't remember if you used feathers.
Another interesting thing for me, are the type of spider crab. Many years ago I was collecting winkles (willicks as we further up north call them) and noticed something being washed up. On checking it. It was a spider crab but nothing like the ones you catch. The legs were about 2 foot long ( 60cm) and it was still alive. I did not know what to eat on it but took it home and asked my dad if I could eat it. I ended up throwing it away not realising that it was the legs which were prized meat. I was always taught never to eat almost dead or dead animals as we don't know what killed them.
Bringing my story to a close, over here we can buy spider crab legs in -clusters- but are prohibitively expensive for my wife and I.
Thanks again for a great video and looking forward to our next fishing adventure. Tight lines mate.

Another educational Friday vid, John.
The Lobster season starts on 1st October 08. 00 hours and lasts until 30 th November here in Bergen, Norway. I am looking at giving it a go. Didn't catch what you use for bait in your pots for Lobster.
Have asked some of the local fishermen there fav Lobster bait, the number one bait seems to be Wrasse, cut in half, sun-dried for a few days, so it stinks. Some also said, Wrasse salted for a couple of weeks was as good. The smellier the better. They also maintain that it keeps the crab at bay and lasts longer in the water.
Second on the list was salted Makerel as it doesn't wash out so quickly.
Mind you - when asked WHERE they set their pots. met with. Computer says No.
Afterthought: The older lobster fisherman proposed that Lobsters shy away if the pots -wander- in the tide. Need to be a good weight in the pots, especially in quick / rough tides. Maybe the same for crabs. dunno.
If anyone is interested I can post the Norwegian recipie for salted Mackerel.
Thanks again. I apprecate your time and efforts.

Going pier fishing tomorrow and hoping for mackerel. Looking to get started in beachfishing - I have a 12ft fixed spool spinning searod (ufish 350) already, what's the difference between it and a beachcaster? Is it just that a beachcaster is longer and stronger? Tried putting tinned sardines on a hook for fishing off a pier, but couldn't get it to stay on- was too soft! Just falls apart in the water! Any chance you could you do a video on fishing a handline from a beach? Wonder does it work in the UK, want to try it next! Love your videos, watch every single one.

Another great Info-Tutorial from the Fish Locker stable. This video is typical of the videos John creates. I'm in Australia, an Estuary fisherman & while the fish & fishing techniques vary considerably between UK & Australia the videos are always informative & entertaining. John's easy-going style compliments his presentations. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to more videos. Sorry, I cannot help you clean your boat.

My mom is known as the Butcheress of Lake Ontario, she's got that title because she will keep as many fish as her fishing license permit. I had some conflicts with her and in some cases I straight up dump her fish bucket's content back to the lake. She was not happy. I applaud your fishing professionalism and your environmentally mindedness.

top Presentation.
its worth noting that when touches a mackerel it is the moment it begins to die. takes about three days. the protective slime and tiny scales com off and bacteria sets in.
better to hold hook tight and invert the hook and most times the mackerel fall off untouched.

Great video, yeh my old school friend use to go lobstering and did exactly what you said about the line getting wrapped around his leg. I don't think they ever found his body but they found the boat going round in big circle's, that was a sad time, it was a good few years ago.

Thats why I stopped crab fishing as the string got my foot and I hung on to the shooting bar for my life. Luckily the skipper slung the boat in reverse and I managed to cut the string. Skipper was well pi++ed off as we had to lift and splice the string again.

Another great video John. Disappointing spider crabs! Great to see some good size Mackerel.
Seen some other videos and people are taking the tiny ones that are no bigger than sprats.
Look forward to your next video as always. All the best Graham
