Coastal Foraging on the low tide line for delicious edibles is one of our favourite things to do. Exploring rock pools and searching for Crabs, Clams and other sea life is not only fascinating but is a great way to get some fresh air and enjoy the outdoors. Then after collecting what we needed for a meal we clean them on the shore. Then go for a delicious family cook up

13: 05 - for anyone who doesn-t know why this happens, like why smells can trigger such emotional feelings about our past, and is curious, it-s because of this. When we smell something, those -smell- molecules go into our nose and to this thing called the olfactory bulb, which is where those smell molecules are turned into signals that will be sent to the brain so that we sense whatever we are smelling. This olfactory bulb is very near an area of our brain called the limbic system, the part of our brain that is associated with memory and emotional responses to our environment. So the signals go straight towards the limbic system first. As a result, our sense of smell is a very strong emotion-evoking sense. It-s the reason why when you smell a certain scent it might remind you of your childhood, a place, an ex lover/friend or whatever, and can almost make you relive those memories of being with them or being wherever you were. You can also sort of use this to your advantage, for example, say you are studying for a test, one that involves memory and not as much application- like a vocab test, well while you-re studying, if you place a lemon (or anything with a specific smell) in your vicinity, then study a set of words, then during your test, if you have that same lemon (or whatever) smell in your vicinity, it may trigger those memories you associated with the words. Emotional memories are made and kept in our brains much stronger than factual memories, so since this involves your limbic system by introducing the lemon smell with the words, there-s a better chance you will remember those words than if you just studied them normally. I remember when I learned that in HS human anatomy I was just so fascinated by this concept, so I hope someone else finds this fascinating if they see it.

I-m putting in a reservation for Spargo-s Kitchen, I love mussels, the last time I cooked any I was cooking in a 900 seat restaurant, ran the back line, did the seafood and the vegetables and the stock-s and sauces it was my favorite restaurant kitchen to work in. I had 3 steam jacket stock pots, a 10, 60, and a 120 gallon. On this day I put the 10gallon pot to good use, the Chef would order the seafood and one Friday I checked in the order and there were two cases of green point mussels from New Zealand and I ask Chef, what do you want me to do with these? Use them for garnish, they were pretty. I saw the head waitress and said Jeanie go get some bowels and forks and spoons, bread too. She said what for, and I said look at these, as I was putting the seaweed from the box in the pot and layering mussels between layers of seaweed, poured in a bottle of dry white wine, and got them steaming, we had a nice lunch and I used them as garnish for haddock wrapped in phyllo dough with a Dijon Beurre blanc sauce and swordfish Veracruz the next night, thanks for the video like I said I want a reservation for Spargo-s Kitchen, you and yours stay safe and healthy

Never commented upon this video before despite watching it numerous times for ideas. The coastal foraging for muscles in particular interested me. Recently ventured to the coast and whilst down there took it upon myself to forage for some muscles. Sadly, didn't have as much luck as yourself there. The muscles were small. Couldn't bring myself to kill a crab which I caught and later released - biggest crab I've seen in person too. Fish, muscles and clams are probably all I'm able to catch and eat. Thanks for sharing.

Hiya John inshore foraging is starting to take over, red signal crayfish, now you're not allowed to remove them alive, so when I go trout fishing in teesdale, I put a rod out with a worm and a bit of tangled wool, you can't fail to catch/trap cray fish after a positive identification obviously our native crayfish are protected, you get 10/12 in a bucket and get the camping stove fired up, really nice lunch half way through a fishing session -

You stir some great memories from living in Falmouth and Penryn as a boy.
How lucky we were to live in such a beautiful and bountiful place. It warms my heart to see the lifestyle is still on going.
You can take the man out of Cornwall but you cannot take Cornwall out of the man.
Love your work-

I have literally watched and rewatched a whole bunch of your foraging videos with you alone or with your family, James is such a cute kid, as well as you fishing on the boat & I won't ever forget the pair of enormous lobsters you caught in the crab pot, how humane to mark them & release them!

I love your videos. Someday I hope to forage on the beach myself and cook outside on the beach. But I also really appreciate that you are showing cooking in a kitchen, where you make tasty food that I can cook myself at home (until I can forage on my own.
