#2 Shore Fishing UK - Flounder and Bass Fishing in an Estuary - The Fish Locker

Shore fishing for Bass and Flounder is a British winter tradition. Finding some sheltered shore fishing in winter can really keep the love for angling alive during the dark and rainy months. Here I fish a new shore mark in an estuary targeting Flounder and Bass. I explain the rigs and baits I use and show how to unhook a deep hooked flatfish

A great video John, lots of helpful information. Thanks for including details about the rod and reel. I already have a Penn Surfblaster 2 and I want to buy another fixed spool and was thinking about the 8000 surfblaster three. What's the difference between the Rival and the Surfblaster other than a few quid, and would the Rival work well as a general reel to cover an assortment of rough and clean ground? Or, can you recommend any other alternatives you've come across? I hope you don't mind me asking but I know you choose and pay for your own tackle so I know you're not getting paid to be in favour of a particular product. Best wishes, Mark, Huddersfield

Love your videos, and all the knowledge you put into them. i-ve been watching you for some time now. This summer/autumn i want to start shore fishing. I haven-t fished in 20 years since i was a kid. i have absolutely no equipment. I live in East London so i can drive to the south, south east, east from London. From what i-ve seen there is mostly shallow water/sand beds. If i go now to a tackleshop what i need to buy to be able to use 2 rods like you, from ZERO. Long question but maybe you can make it as a video also to help others in my situation! THank you for all your hard work and passion!

The funny thing is that it's probably the people that never take fish home to eat, that end up killing fish they think they are returning through having no understanding of fish anatomy. I've seen some clueless buggers trying to unhook pike in particular, who have no understanding that going in through the gill cover puts them up to ten inches closer to their hooks (which of course they've allowed the pike to swallow) and takes all the teeth out of the problem as a bonus!

Great vid again folks. Very interesting to see how those estuary Bass bite, up here in the North East I would put money on it being a Whiting. Bass up my way hit very fast and hard and you often have to stand and hold the rod to have a chance of hooking into one. I know its difficult filming on your own but it would be good if you could find a angle that let us watch the rod tips as you are talking, your head is always in the way. LOL. Thanks again for the video, Cheers.

Finally, after a hectic house move I managed to catch up with your videos. I'd been toying with some long forceps to turn the line through the gills and remove deep hooks the same way you do, but after seen you using the -hook tool- I'm going to definitely adopt the idea (hope you don't mind John: ). It seems to be a much more friendly way to unhook deep set hooks and less stressful for the fish. Thanks for another great video and some great tips John.

Brilliant video John. Had a problem with YT and I lost all my subscriptions. After three days of searching I have finally got the all back! I-m busy catching up with what I have missed! Thanks for explaining that the flat fish are hybridising, nice to know why some have orange spots but are not plaice! Nice to be able to identify what species that you caught. Always an interesting video from your good self. Take care and be safe mate. Graham--------

Hi John, great video as ever. I'm based in Poole so fish for Flounder all winter. although very thin over the last few years, and have used deep hooked technique a lot. Not a criticism, but a possible tip. If you offset your position when filming just to side a bit, we could see the rod tips at the same time. I'm always find myself glued to watching the tips in the background while listening to whoever is filming. Keep them coming!

Great session John with lots of useful hints & tips! Well done on the Flounder, and even though they were small, nice to see so many schoolie Bass around. Well done on the Chrimble pressies - love that Penn rod & the Rival reel. Stay safe & well.
EDIT: Where did you get the square-shaped tubs that you were putting the Fish in John? They seem bigger and more useful than the average builder's bucket!

Tackle Tart! (I'm only jealous because all my effort is focused on moving to Devon/Somerset and when I get settled will be upgrading my tackle too. I love these estuary videos and hope in the near future to be copying your techniques for myself. Great upload, glad you went through the unhooking of flounder with a much clearer demonstration. Nicely filmed thanks for posting.

Great unhooking technique, when done carefully it's a great way of unhooking flatties. I used to see scores of palm sized flat fish dead under Bournemouth pier when spearfishing as many anglers just wiggle the hook out with a high risk of puncturing the heart in flat fish. Circle hooks can reduce the risk of a deep hook, but I find your bite to hook up ratio drops.
