I have never used an indicator. I grew up in Seattle, went to college in Easter Washington and have spent 35 years of my life fly fishing and I believe that using an indicator makes you less of a fly fisher. You are using a bobber. The word indicator is just a fancy term for bobber. And this creates a problem in that the bobber removes a level of skill needed to become a competent fly fisher. I mean, all you are doing is looking at the bobber and making sure your line is tight enough to allow for a hook set VS learning to cast, mend and drift properly. And yes, you will snag up less often if you use a bobber but as you get better at fly fishing you will snag up less and less because you will cast in the correct place, mend properly and feel the difference between a snag, a hang up and a hit. And you will miss far fewer hits. And then, if you have pre-tied rigs you don't have to worry about wasting that much time retying. And I understand, believe me I do. I even invented a dropper rig fly box for this exact reason, it is called the MurphyBox. which, I hope kind of shows how much time I have spent fly fishing and how many times I snagged up but I kept at it and now I am super good. And I am not saying that this type of fishing will not help beginners catch more fish. It will. And it will sell a lot of gear too but the fact is, fishing with a bobber reduces the level of skill needed to be consistently effective and there is no doubt about this. You want to be a good fly fisher, you learn to cast, mend and set your drifts and then you feel the flies bouncing along the bottom VS focus on some bobber. I mean, really. when you buy these bobbers do they come with a 6 pack and a jar of salmon eggs?

I find the foam pinch-on indictors can be moved up and down the leader after a little while in the water; and do maintain their position. Moreover, I cannot remember losing them in snags and the like. They are up high enough that the line is too stout to break at that location. If a person is too lazy to pick them up in the event that they do fall to the ground, well, perhaps that person should not be outdoors in any case.
I guess the best solution would be to make one biodegradable over a reasonable amount of time.

Great video. I-ve been nymphing with these techniques for many years, and there isn-t much about nymphing that y-all left out of this video. Other than the ways of identifying current seams (the absolute best place to find trout in streams) you-ve hit all the high points. I-m sharing this one with my family prior to our next trip to the mountains this summer.

I-m about to dip my toe. or hip-waders, into fly fishing. This was among the most informative videos on how to best catch. trout. I-m sure these skills will translate to steelhead, bass, and pan fish. Well done!

Have used these ones from a drift boat and they worked very well. -Jaydacators- of AC Fly Fishing. Also carried by The Fly Shop in Redding, CA. Made from balsa wood. Expensive, but probably last for years.

-strike indicator-. why not just tie on a red and white plastic bobber?
indicators are just something that guides came up with to make sure the -sports- could catch more fish.

And the real bonus bonus of using a dry dropper is that you might actually catch a fish on both flies at the same time! Been there, done that. Netting the fish x2 becomes the next challenge.

Strange. If you are right handed why use your right hand to wind the reel. Also, why not call your plastic indicator what it is. . a float?

I try avoid plastic indicators of any kind if they are prone to falling off. Too much plastic in the environment without us adding more.
