I've found the subject of minnow vs. Jig & waxie varies from lake to lake, day to day, etc just as a lure color, size, type varies from lake to lake, day to day, minute by minute. I do have a friend (oldtimer) that swears by crappie minnow for ice fishing, But I've had better luck over all with jig & waxie for the most part. But really I think the best thing/things about waxies vs. Minnows is easier to transport, store to reuse, cheaper (so more to spend on more jigs, lures, equimptment, etc, save time not having to go get them or get more, waste them when unused, Not to mention with the regs here on live bait.

The problem are the greedy fish heads who do nothing but go and limit out as often as possible to stock their freezers. Lets not beat around the bush here. You see them all the time on every lake. The guys with permanent shacks and always in them over a hole. Outlaw more than 2 nights on the ice, ENFORCE bag limits and install -one over- laws. Problem solved. that was easy.

I do best with minnows fall through winter! Plastics are just a marketing tool to get people to buy more by saying it's better than all the others. Look at how many plastic companies there are. And crappie minnow -companies? -

Catch and release should be more encouraged. It's kind of what save bass fishing back in the day. Keep only what you really need
