Longcod are definitely one of the ugliest fish in the ocean, but damn tasty.
Ocean caught salmon are also when they are in their best condition. As mentioned in the video, not only do they stop eating when they hit freshwater, they also start to mutate and die. If you catch salmon in freshwater, they will ideally still have sea lice parasites living on them. Which means that they have not been in freshwater longer than three days. As they mutate and die, they begin to decay and their flesh becomes mushy. It can vary, but generally speaking salmon becomes inedible after about ten days in freshwater, if they are still alive. Always catch salmon in either the ocean or the estuaries of rivers and streams to get the salmon in their best condition.
Things have definitely changed since I was last halibut fishing in the 1990s. The limit was two, and we tossed any halibut weighing less than 50 pounds (a chicken halibut) back into the ocean. My personal best was 187 pounds, but 200 pounders were not uncommon in Katchemak Bay. Any halibut that was bigger than 75 pounds is shot before being brough on board the boat. Halibut are 85% muscle, and they have been known to break bones while flopping around on the deck.

I've watched Victor for years and what a great, talented fisherman and commentator. He's very kind to his in laws as well. Brian isn't the best fisherman but in an awkward way he tries. Jed looks to be pretty unathletic at best but very nice. His sister Brook is definitely the fisherperson in her family. She can catch fish with the best of them! Also, congratulations on your daughter Lilie. She's beautiful and no doubt she will inherit the advanced skills in catching fish like a pro, like her parents. Looking forward to seeing your new boat as well. Exciting times!

Brian and Tanner. thank you! I haven't laughed so hard in a while and I neeeded it. What a hoot! Vic. that meal looks incredible! Hubby just had to go gluten free, and I'll look into polenta (I hope I spelled that right. Thank you, THANK YOU Vic for a great way to cook brussel sprouts! I hope it's okay if I copy that. We just had our very first taste of Alaska Salmon and Halibut. I'll never go back to the farm raised fish we get on the East Coast. GREAT VIDEO! Dennis, as always you captured all the moments to perfection! Have a great week Landshark Family!

Vik, try Brussel sprouts with a Balsamic glaze. my sister chops up pork belly or thick cut bacon. Fry the bacon/pork in a skilletDo exactly what you did to the Brussel sprouts but drizzle the bacon fat over them. After about 8-10 minutes, hit them with the balsamic glaze. Chop the bacon and when the sprouts are done, crumble the bacon bits’ over them. EVERYONE IN MY FAMILY EATS THEM NOW!

Lingcod is delicious! You need to prep your veggies. Peel the dark butter leaves off the Brussel Sprouts and some of the leaves off the Broccolini. I think your family is running out of things to say. The baby is very cute but to be honest I have a problem with people trying to make their child perform on command. Let it go. Nice meal.

I truly wish my health would allow me to travel and do this before I die, unfortunately I think it's a pipe dream now. Recovering from prostate cancer, got a pulmonary embolism and now have to have surgery to fix a serious hernia from the Prostate cancer op.

Alaska has the best fish fast food in the States. Imagine snacking on Halibut fish & chips. While your pockets are filled with all of the 1001 flavors of smoked salmon candy.
Then there's the other game meats that Alaska Offers. What a place Alaska.

I live in Washington State. The area I live, I have counted 50 bald eagles scavenging during the summer during low tide of the Hood Canal. We have salmon, king cod, sea bass, and halibut as well. The mountains are beautiful as a backdrop to our shores.

The ling regs are insane. Every fish you can catch in alaska you can also catch off Washington and Oregon except you can keep more. With coho as the exception. You dont have to run as far for halibut in alaska. And reds are easier to target

In my experience with tailor (bluefish, people always complain about it being mushy too. I've always cooked tailor fillets from frozen (not defrosted first, and have never once had a texture problem. Might be worth trying with your salmon.

Brussels sprouts are legit! Let me give you a chef’s tip, par boil them for about five minutes before you roast them it removes a lot of the sulfuric acid in the brussels sprout giving them a sweeter taste.

Wow, that giant lingcod looks like a real sea monster! It's amazing to watch the entire process, from catching such an incredible fish in Alaskan waters to cleaning and cooking it.

You should take the dark green leaves off the brussel sprouts because that's where the bitterness comes from, it's surprising how sweet they can be just steamed.

Fun fact halibut are born like a normal fish, one eye per side. When they pick the side they want to lay on the eye moves. There are lefty and righty halibut.

Don’t let the trawlers see you caught a fish unless you’re done fishing. They’ll change course ans run their gear right behind your boat.
