Jay, great video! This would have made my life much easier last winter. I feel like you missed a few points about the propane auger.
Pros:
1. No oil mixing! Propane augers are typically four stroke, so no messy oil mixing.
2. No gas leaks. Once the fuel is disconnected, that's it. A propane auger is a much better option for someone who only has a car and doesnt want to smell 2 stroke/gasoline the whole one hour to Gimli.
Cons:
1. Almost always more expensive than the gasoline counterpart.
Looking forward to the rest of the series!

Great video!
Question. After your other video about electric augers. I bought the Strike Master 10. Looking forward to trying it out this season.
Well 2 questions.
Is there a quick release available?
Is it best to keep the head in the vehicle ( to keep it warm ) while driving to your destination or its safe in the back of the truck?

I used a gas auger from 1976 until the engine seized in 2015. After that I drilled up to 30 holes a day through up to 3 feet of ice with a Nils hand auger for 2 years. 3 years ago I bought a Strikemaster electric auger. If the electric auger dies I'll go back to hand cranking a sharp Nils but I'll never own another gas auger.

6inch hand auger got er done with 3ft of ice. But at that point its really only about 3-5 holes per person on a given day. Still viable if only fishing for small pike and walleye. Looking to upgrade to gas 8 this year

in utah 12 inch is the limit for hole size. sucks i'd love to make a big hole sometime and do some sight fishing. that said i've had my leg go in a 12 inch hole that was snow covered so i see why they are frowned upon.

Any recommendation for transporting a gas auger in an suv? Im worried about gas spill and fumes, Im thinking I might have to look into ion electric but they are pretty expensive for me here in Winnipeg. Thanks Jay!

Little tidbit for everyone, propane boils at -44 degrees. If your temperature is below -44 propane will turn back into liquid state. Have to warm the bottle up. Happens quickly with 1lb bottles.

Excellent video on the right auger for the right circumstances, lots of info but not overwhelming, even to a beginner to the sport! Nice job, Jay!
