In this episode of Field Trips: West Coast, I've made it north to Central California to meet up with John Kenny in Morro Bay, CA. Our target: my first lingcod from the kayak. Watch as I knock off a few bonus species on my way to my first ling. The biggest one gets a little payback, too. Watch until the end for a preview at episode 6!

Hi Robert, I lived on the pacific coast for most of my life, and I was in Fort Brag fishing off the rocks. I had a ultra lite fishing rod and I had a Senko Lime Green worm. I wackey hooked the worm and through that sucker out. LOL. I had a Ling hit that sucker and the fight was on. I got the fish to the rocks and soon as the fishing line hit the rocks, it was all over. By the way, if you get your hands on Abolne guts, its the best bait you will ever use. Like your show and watch it often. Keep up the great work.

I recently found out (not living in alaska for many years) that yup there firstly all commercial boats and in secondly in 2021 all boats being fished from period will be required to have deepwater release devices for rockfish. They are really simple, easy to make yourself and probably save a lot of fish.

Pulls up gophers from 130 and the swimbladder is protruding from the mouth and eyes are bulging and says there ok to release because its shallow. Dude! If your going to release them, you need a descending device. If your going to come to our waters and catch fish, release them properly.

FYI just throw the fish with mouth open hard to the surface of water and their air bladder will suck back into them and they swim off. Quit poking holes in them or use a deep release. But the above method works great.

Back in the 50's and 60's my Dad would catch 20 to 30 lbs Lingcod off the rocks just north of San Francisco.
I've taken several in the 20 lbs range, spearfishing off Cannery Roe in Monterey.

OMG your locals did you a disservice by not telling you to tithe at sanddab back on the hook and drop it back down that's the best bait for lingcod ever! Hmu next time you want to fish local!

In WA we use swimbaits that are like 10inchs long, lingcod arent a smell feeder really only sight. Stops a lot of the smaller rock fish from hitting it. And we do big jigging motions

Well filmed and edited kayak fishing videos from an experienced angler that seems to love fishing. this is the best you could ask for. Thanks for your efforts in bringing these to us.

Mr. Field, instead of carrying a club to dispatch the fish try using a spike. i personally use one to put it through the head (between the eyes) to put them out of their misery.

SLO! my old trumping ground. as Cal Poly grad, I have to get back to there and try some kayak fishing. Lingcod is very good eating. Nice video.
