HW News - Intel Arc Shows How It's Done, EVGA Phasing Out, GPD Ally Competitor

This hardware news update talks about leaks regarding a huge 4-slot NVIDIA GPU, GPD Win 4 devices coming out vs. the ASUS ROG Ally, the NVIDIA 50-series getting pushed back to 2025, and Amp Modmat updates! Abe's: Intel improved Assassin's Creed Unity performance because Digital Foundry made a video recently about Arc driver progress. AC Unity is one of the presenter's favorite games, so they featured AC Unity in the video and complained about its performance on Arc. A week or two later, Intel rolls out an update claiming a big performance improvement.
Also: Intel does NOT, in fact, have their driver issues ironed out. Try playing Halo MCC, Deus Ex Human Revolution, Just Cause 4, Assassin's Creed Unity / Syndicate / Origins / Odyssey (Origins performs worst of the four), Sleeping Dogs, Fallout 76, Tomb Raider (2013). I could go on. (Yes, the big AC Unity fix moved performance from outright broken to a low-fps mess that no longer stutters slow clap ). Absolutely unbelievable that Intel's Arc drivers are still the mess that they are this long after launch.

As an A770 and A750LE owner Intel or GN really should have a list of the top 200 games on Steam and state their playability status. For GN it'd probably be too intensive to do, but its the only accurate way to review their performance. Intel has the list, they have to so they know which games to fix the bugs in they just won't release it since individuals would be horrified how many games don't actually work even 10 months after launch.
To clarify, itts not like the experience is terrible, I bought the A770LE 3 months ago and was satisfied enough to pick up an A750LE for 200 because I'M CONFIDENT THEY WILL GET THERE based on these updates, but these titles Intel Arc Shows How It's Done is incredibly misleading. Unity was clearly broken and that's pretty standard for the ARC cards unfortunately, its hard to tell but probably 1 in 10 games don't work still with another 20-30% having graphics issues you wouldn't find on AMD or NVIDIA. For me Rome 2, Attila, and Britannia Total War still don't work which is a huge bummer especially when you see Warhammer 3 being used for every benchmark and have player counts that are larger than F12022 or Deathloop only they aren't in reviewers benchmarks so they don't care. And there's other quirks, like your system not being able to wake up from sleep mode or random crashing on every 5th LOL game for no apparent reason that should always be brought up when talking about ARC.
This especially should be noted as it is clear that consumers are not FPS/ snobs as indicated by the overwhelming marketshare of NVIDIA GPUs. They'd rather get a 279 12gb 3060 than a stronger 310 RX 6700XT because the price difference is not worth giving up stability. Especially because since new feature sets cause obsolescence in these GPUs at the same time 5 years from now no one will really care if you get 30 or 37 fps in the latest title, you're looking to upgrade anyways.

Couple of things, first off AMD is not even putting up a challenge to the top tier performance so Nvidia has no reason to need to rush out a new faster product.
A plus for the consumer is as expensive as these top tier cards are now giving them a longer lifespan before they are superseded by a newer faster model will add some long term value over having the shorter time between series releases.
This honestly even is a plus to those who are running the higher tier 30 series cards as well because even those cards will remain closer to the top of the line cards for longer as well.
If Nvidia does have headroom still left within the 4090 chips I would expect more chance of seeing a 4090 super or ti edition card making an appearance within the product stack as well to sort of create a new desirable sku since they will be delaying the new cards even longer.
Now is the first time in a long while that a person can pretty much walk in and buy any GPU they may want and find it in stock on the shelf pretty much regardless of brand or tier level.
Going to be interesting to see what the black Freiday and Holiday sales will do price wise for gpu's this year.

interesting I have a question about Nvidia, maybe it's something silly or I don't understand, and this comment might be long, but I hope you can read it and clarify this doubt for me because I want to upgrade from a 2070. And here comes my problem.
The 2000 series introduced DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) linked to its hardware, then the 3000 series had DLSS 2 and 2.5 (I believe), and now the 4000 series has DLSS 3. If we observe the trend, Nvidia releases a new DLSS version tied to the hardware with each generation, and game developers implement the option for the latest version (DLSS 3) in this case. Does this mean that for each previous generation, it will depend solely on the raw performance of the graphics card, as the previous DLSS version is no longer developed? Wouldn't that be planned obsolescence? And if that's the case, we've seen that the raw performance of this generation is significantly lower than the 3000 series, which would lead consumers to upgrade to the next generation, whether they want to or not. Does the same apply to AMD's generation? I hope you understand my question. Please help me clarify this doubt. Regards.

Thank you for the transparency on the mod mat issues! I'd say GN is absolutely living up to the same standards that PC industry manufacturers and vendors are held up to.
EVGA's new 3-year PSU warranty: I wonder if this is actually because EVGA doesn't want to mislead customers with a long warranty when they don't believe they'll be around much longer.
Mega 4090: almost appears to be a datacenter/enterprise GPU that's inside a reworked, custom heatsink. People can do a lot with 3D printing and even better if they have the access and desire with a CNC. Seeing all the scratches on the blank paint and dings all over makes it appear as a re-hashed 4090 cooler. Then again, wasn't there a rumor of a 4090 Ti some time ago that wasn't released due to it melting itself? I don't doubt that some prototype silicon has been produced to evaluate the feasibility of a 4090 Ti or 4-series Titan, but weird seeing this frankenstein at someone's home --- seems to tell me the project died and the company allowed the samples/prototypes to go home with engineers or whoever.

Gamers Nexus Just a question about the sponsor product, Der8auer did a recent stream, about air coolers, using the pads and experienced cracking of the pad during installation. This seemed to make the product fail. Just wondering if you could do an independent piece at some stage, covering the percentage of occurance and if possible the main causes, also proper installation techniques to avoid and maybe a comment from the sponsor, ( Der8auer) with regard to warranty position if cracking occurs. Sorry if this is inappropriate or put you guys in an uncomfortable position, it's just you guys do the BEST unbiased investigations and although Der8auer would most likely deal with the situation well if a problem occurs or if he is aware of it being so, he is the manufacturer and therefore not unbiased. :-)

I don't even own the mod mat (still have my trusty old Alphacool), and I mean this in the most respectful and constructive it can possibly be read, but I wouldn't have cared about the cards or the die cast pin. It's really nice that you try to correct the error, but offering an optional return and maybe some store credit would have been better. The point of having the diagrams printed on the mat is not having to reference anything else, and a card I will misplace is in no way more useful than just googling it.
Besides, I would have been more happy to buy a broken mod mat if it was signed with we fu up . Honesty and transparency is the important part, and you aced that part. The trinkets just don't seem necessary, at least to me.

By now we expect nothing less from you than handling an error the way you want other companies to do so.
It's really refreshing to have an informative AND investigative Computer HW Media souce that shows its trustworthiness every single time.
besides the great coverage from different angles of many interesting topics this is probably the most important reason GN got me hooked even after i had my first PC built completely on my own again after almost 20 years.
Thank you and keep it up!
BTW, i am kinda pissed now at myself for ordering the other medium Anti-Static Modmat without any errors. i am missing out on the cool gimmicks. ;)

For Nvidia to maintain their 1T market cap they're gonna need to see widespread adoption of ai tech and for someone to monetize ai effectively. It doesn't make sense to add ai generated lines into a game if it isn't good enough to increase sales over the cost of implementation. Theres no doubt in my mind we'll get there but will it happen fast enough to offset their falling gaming sales. Imo there's significant short-term risk in Nvidia stock as its current revenue is not anywhere near high enough to support their current valuation. The market is betting on big growth in an environment where money isn't free anymore.

As much as it bums everyone out, EVGA closing the book is probably the better move. The alternative is handing their good name over to someone else who hasn't earned the goodwill that comes with a name like the one EVGA has built for itself, and that situation would most likely only be abused for a shortsighted cash-grab that trashes the EVGA legacy.
It's better for consumers that good names are allowed to die with dignity having kept their integrity to the end than for a name to be used to trick people into buying products that don't meet an expected standard of quality.

a lot of drama with the poor support from GPD on GPD devices that I think is worth digging into if you tear one down - in addition, very low quality thermal paste, missing thermal pads seems to occur often as well. Bios flashing, for some bizarre reason tends to freak out core isolation so if it's on, your OS might be hosed after flashing bios, and there are a lot of folks who have found malware pre-installed on prior GPD win devices. Really, really cool devices but I ended up selling mine for these reasons and going with an Ally.

honestly I haven't bought anything intel for a long time but their GPUs are looking promising.. I mean currently you can buy a 770 for dirt cheap and it has some really great results for gamers in return, and their updated firmwares is really looking good. if they deliver 4080ish performance with the battlemage as they supposedly will for a decent price (say a 500/600 bucks), that would be a no brainer. I hope they'll come up with their own cuda/rocm version soon as well so we can buy it for workstations as well. I sure would

Latest Intel Arc Drivers 4514 also contain a lot of unlisted improvements, one specifically being Destiny 2. I had a case with Intel and they even gave me the bug number of the issue fixed, it practically eliminated stutters for me. They did not list it as they have other known bugs still open for destiny 2 though (per the support engineer). I am noting improvements in other titles as well - e.g. station to station - used to stutter badly, now it's smooth even if fps are in the 20s at times

I think if Intel continues to be open and honest they will gain a large amount of customers over the coming years. People are getting tired of the monopoly and the games that NVIDIA and AMD play on the GPU market. An open and honest company is sure to do well, even if they are not the best and we have to be beta testers from time to time. When they have the drivers figured out, hopefully they'll keep the honest and open policy and give us good GPUs for fair prices.

I'm sure that those who picked up misprints modmat will be grateful for the solution you came up with and now treat it as a collector's item to brag about. It's really great to see the application of the principles and high standards you espouse. It once again makes me feel good about the large mat I bought from you to use during my recent new pc build. Cheers, Steve! You and your team keep up the amazing work. It is greatly appreciated

On the one hand it is absolutely the right call to practice what you preach , as they say, and do what you can to fix any issues that crop up with your products. But on the other, if you pulled them and said this is what happened and then put them back up as a novelty item people would have snatched them up. Job well done making it right though.
Also, make more of the extra items you are including. Those are cool.

I wish EVGA had simply transitioned to a consulting house for PC hardware companies. Essentially, they could partner with any PSU, MB, GPU, etc company to help optimize their designs, bios, etc. Basically keep all of the best bits of EVGA without the manufacturing, logistics, etc. I know I would buy a video card that was engineered in partnership with EVGA , EVGA optimized , or even an EVGA edition of a card.

If only customer support could be like this for all companies... Hey, we messed up, we can't really fix it so you can return it if you want... but if you want to keep the mat, here's some stuff to make sure you have the correct pinouts, and these cool little pins. Thanks for your support and understanding.
Love it. My only large company experiences like this were at Best Buy, EVGA, and Logitech.

Kind of annoying that GPD is going to refresh the Win 4 right after I took delivery of the 6800u Indiegogo unit, but I can say its better than both the Steamdeck and the Ally.
Having the hardware keyboard is essential I'd argue, as this is a PC, and software keyboard support on PC is le suck.
Much more pocketable, ample cooling, and has logged over 100 hours in Tears of the Kingdom, 1080p at 15W...

reply

Why not just give everyone who received the incorrect mat a corrected one? Wouldn't that have been a much simpler fix? If it were me, I'd prefer that to some pins and a card that are separate from the rest of the correct info.
If I'm using the mat for pinouts, it is confusing to have conflicting info. It is better to just have the 'clean' mat (and a backup mat that still protects a table somewhere).
