In this video we'll teach you how to compare two documents in Word. By using this feature, we can compare two versions of a document. It comes in handy when managing multiple revisions in the document, especially legal documents. Consider a contract you had emailed your client and were sent back the updated version without track changes enabled in the document. To review the changes made, we will use the compare feature in Word. First of all, open a new word document. Next, move to the review tab and click on the Compare option. From the options displayed here, we will select the Compare option. This will open a dialogue box where we have to upload both the original and the updated documents separately. So make sure you have the original and the updated files available. Once you locate both the documents, click on Ok. Microsoft Word will open the document in a comparative interface. The format of the interface consists of 4 sections. The first section on the left-hand side is called Revisions, it shows a list of words and phrases which are deleted, inserted or changed in the revised document. The second section in the center of the interface is the Compared Document section which highlights the areas where actual changes have been made in the Revised Document, such as over here. The Revisions section functions like a navigation bar for the Compared Document section. When you click on the contents of the list in the Revisions section, you can jump directly to that part in the Compared Document section. It just makes it easier to navigate through the changes quickly. In the compared document section, you can see that a red line is appearing next to these lines. That means changes were made to these lines. To view what was added or deleted, open the Display for Review dropdown in the tracking section here and select the All Markup option. This will clearly show the deletions and additions made to the original document. On the right-hand side of the interface you will be able to see two small sections cascaded vertically. The upper section shows the Original Document and the lower section depicts the revised document. Its a good reference point to see how the original and the updated document look, especially if any formatting changes were made to the document. Now you can go through the document and easily identify the changes made. Would you like to know more about any specific Word feature?

On my computer there was no tracking lines in red or blue. I searched at least half a day. and then I found you! I can't thank you enough for such a simple solution! Simple Markup changed to All Markup! I had to compare 2 documents for the VP of a small company! I even went on my own home computer to use an older version of Word! I saved it in a PDF so he could see the changes. Thank you!

Hi very good explanation. I wanted to know once I compare the document and send the saved compared document for final review. Is it possible for the other reviewer to see what I have rejected and I have accepted since whenever I reject something in the compared document its not there in the document? Please advice.

I'm having two same documents with font difference. Now I want to compare these both documents. On the compared document the line continuously exists as the font is different. How to ignore only font and rest I want to compare including bold and italic? Is there any way please tell me.

I am writing in my report in word. But whenever on the next day I open that file, sometimes it gives the pop up that someone made changes since you last edited your document.
Can you please help me, how to know who made the changes and how to know where are the changes made.

Hmm. Question. Upon reopening the saved comparison document, the screen only shows the one pane, i. e, the original document showing the redlined comparisons. I want to be able to save and share with others the screen that shows all three columns. How do I do that?

It's interesting to see differences between documents, but more interesting is to be able to modify at least one of the compared document. How to do this?
When I try, I get the message: modifications not allowed because the selection is locked.

Thank you! Boss just asked for this for a couple documents. My best advice to anyone is get full admin on your work PC, implement other hardware and automate work by any means.
