well be showing you how to add a Table of Contents in Microsoft Word. A Table of Contents automatically displays the important parts of your document. A Table of Contents is very handy with a large paper and often required. Lets add a Table of Contents to this document. 1. We first need to tell Word what our headings are. Format your heading to your liking. 2. Select the heading and right-click Heading 1 at the top and click Update Heading 1 to Match Selection. 3. Now select each of your headings and click Heading 1 for each or Heading 2 if you have subheadings. You can also use the short-cut Ctrl+Alt+1 to set a selection to the designating Heading. 4. Now that we have our headings set up, we can make a Table of Contents. 5. Click at the start of your document and press Ctrl+Enter to create a new page. 6. Go to the References tab at the top and click Table of Contents then choose which template you want. 7. If you change your headings you will need to update your Table of Contents. 8. Select the Table and then click Update Table. Remember to set your headings up and dont forget to update the Table of Contents if you change your headings! What other automatic features of Word do you want to learn about? itech: This is helpful to setting up headings but it does not address the shifting when updating the ToC. It continues to shift to other places in the document.
