Librem 5 Phone Specs Released - Let's Compare - Chris Titus Tech Well, it has happened... Librem 5 Phone Specs were released! Are they a letdown? Let's Compare it to an Android phone in the same price point and go over what we are paying for with the Librem 5 Phone

At this point I am willing to PAY THE PRICE for freedom... but from the specs POV to some its a unbalanced ROI.
still WILL BUY IT!
eventually tier the options/ price points into 3 levels as I remembered that some of us use /less hardware than others.
Librem 5 premiere/premium v3-v4 suggestions
>4- 8 gb of ram
>1080 x 1440 screen
>802.11 abgnac wifi
>dual sim and/or SD card please.
+ditch front camera in favor of a even better rear cam / make rear cam flip forward/ make front and rear cam pop out? .... in this way the camera hardware ki77switch could be embedded into the assembly. I personally suggest this as either a cost saving measure or possible feature as many people I know don-t do the whole -record me- -thing-
The Librem 5 phone is very efficient from what I've seen so maybe this phone could be the middle spec. and the -power users- ( i-mean tethered users) could buy my suggested high end spec.

Sounds interesting, I will be on the lookout for your in-depth review. I-ve been a Apple user for many years, and I-ve begun the painful process of migrating all my data from the Apple ecosystem to Linux. I will use my Linux system and smartphone for a handful of things, nr 1: Taking pictures and filming videos (in good quality) with the smartphone and transferring and editing them on the Linux system to later upload online and preferably being able to also edit them on the phone when I don-t have the option to edit them on the computer.
2: A simple note application that syncs with the same app on both devices, similar to the notes app I-m currently using on my iPhone.
3: Browse the web and watch video content without hiccups.
I-ve been researching this for some time and slowly making the migration. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, you can stop with the silver lining bit. Purism does this with their laptops, too, and that is their hardware specs suck. No getting around it. What you are buying with Purism is the hardware kill switches and Linux distro that will never betray you. If you want a Linux gaming laptop, buy System76, if you want one that can't be hacked by Bluetooth, buy Purism. If you want a phone that plays games, buy a System76 laptop and a Purism phone because WHY WOULD YOU USE A PHONE TO PLAY GAMES? As for screen resolution, why do you want a high resolution screen that's 5 inches long? You can't see it.

Considering that Linux will run a freaking toaster... I'm gonna guess that the specs aren't that much of a concern. People who are interested in this phone aren't looking to be on the bleeding edge of specs on paper. Now I would absolutely love to see if the devs release a ROM that can be flashed onto other handsets, that would be revolutionary if it can be done.

So when might we see you do a video on LineageOS? It'll apparently run on the OnePlus 6 ... which isn't as nice as the 7 pro, but still a lot nicer than the Librem 5's specs.
And isn't part of the point of a Linux based smartphone OS that you have to install it yourself? The Librem may be OSS, but its still a closed shop as far as the hardware goes.

A 6.67- screen? Seriously??? The phones are way too big these days. Ridiculous. I don't need a big screen on my phone, I have a nice big screen TV at home. I prefer small phones that fit in my pants pocket. I refuse to use ios or Android (the hacker's fave os). At least the Librem phone is much more secure and would be the only reason I'd buy one.

I'm willing to pay up to $1,200 for a non-Anrdoid/Apple phone, but hell no. $700 for the privacy I could get on a cheap flip phone or burner phone to text, make calls and use web sites? I'll wait for Microsoft's Andromedia container CoreOS phone based on the same principle that Librem 5's container PureOS is based on.

as I am trying to fully convert everything to Linux as I learn more about it, I am definitely interested in a Linux phone. The benchmark for just about anything I change in my life is -how does this affect my quality of life?- If the phone is just a pain in the ass to use, I probably won't be interested.

Librem 5 seems to be the future in my opinion, i'm sure in the future other distros will work to put them on this phone but 700 dollars for a phone with those specs and with a free OS is completely insane. I don't understand why they marked this price for the phone. The same goes for their laptops.
