This issue of folder with flashing question mark on Macbook may be caused by corrupt macOS & system files, improper disk connection or hardware issues. Whatever causes the error, there are still various working solutions to fix Macbook flashing folder with question mark. Method 1: Boot MacBook with Start-Up Manager Step 1 - Shut down your Macbook by holding down the power button. Step 2 -Press and hold -ALT or Option- key until the Apple logo flashes on your screen. Step 3 - You-ll be prompted to the Macbook Startup Manager. Here select the start disk using the arrow keys and tap -enter- once you have selected the right partition or drive. Your system will restart normally without flashing the question mark folder. Method 2: Repair Startup Disk with Disk Utility Step 1 - First we need to get into recovery mode. To do this turn off your mac by holding the power button. Step 2 - Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold the Command (-) and R keys Step 3 - Release the keys when you see an Apple logo, spinning globe or other startup screen. You might be prompted to enter a password such as the user who is an administrator of this Mac. Enter the requested password to continue. When the Startup is completed you will see the utilities window. Step 4 - Then choose -Disk Utility- from the macOS utilities window. Step 5 - Select the startup disk, which will be named -Macintosh HD-. Step 6 - Click the -First Aid- tab and tap the -Repair- icon to repair the startup disk. Step 7 - Wait for the repairing process to complete and then head to Apple menu. Choose Startup Disk and restart your Macbook. If Disk Utility has successfully repaired the startup disk, you won-t see the Macbook flashing folder with question mark anymore. Method 3: Reinstall macOS Step 1 - Again, hold down the power button and press -Command+R- to put your Macbook into recovery mode. Step 2 - Select -macOS Utilities- and click on -Reinstall macOS-. Step 3 - In the next window, select Macintosh HD and erase the previous startup disk. Step 4 - Now, simply follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall macOS on your laptop. I need help-.. I-m new to MacBook Air! I have been trying to reset it to factory. So far it has let me connect Wi-Fi. It has a globe that spins and has hours to do-.. I don-t know what I am doing wrong. I was using with my friend sign in. She passed away and I-ve taken care of all her affairs. I no longer need her not and it was given to me by her husband. I wanted to reset it for my use. That sounds horrible, but I wanted to clear out her -info-. To change it to mine. I had that ? Folder and I don-t know how to fix it. I-m in tears trying to do this. What am I doing wrong or missing! Any advice or help would be amazing. Mandy

Thank you so much. I accidentally decreased volume in my drive and the mac cannot detect the drive. I was panicking and shut down the mac. Then when I restart it, it shows support and flashing folder. I did command r and it connects to the internet and restored the drive. Now I'm downloading the macOS high Sierra, the year I bought my mac. This saved my life.

Welp the first option did not work. I hold the option key for like 15 min and it just did not work... the second option also did not work cus it was already healthy and so i had to reset the macbook.. The sad thing about it that this was our very first laptop for our family and the only important files in the laptop were the pictures of our selfs younger :(

This totally worked for me, thank you!! I had to go with method number two but was taking over the laptop from a family member and was erasing the hard drive in the first place. Scared me quite a bit after step one didn-t work, but kept trying.
