Nextcloud Hub Competes With Office 365 And Google Docs DistroTube The latest version of Nextcloud marked a new direction for the project, including a new nameNextcloud Hub! No longer is Nextcloud just a file syncing app. Now you have a calendar, contact list, email client, video chat client and groupware file editing functions available. Nextcloud Hub is setting up to be a nice free and open source alternative to Office 365 and Google Docs. - https://nextcloud.com/hub/

NextCloud 17 has most of these features, though it looks like they improved it a lot.
I have Collabora Office addin, which is a web version of LibreOffice, so as well as the New Text Document, I have -New Document- for their word equivalent, New Spreadsheet and New Presentation.
I needed two virtual servers in addition to the NextCloud server. One for Collabora, which has to be a Linux server, and a reverse proxy, which I use FreeBSD for, but Linux would work as well.
I have two NextCloud servers, one for my private documents, and another for documents I share with other people, and both can use the same Collabora and reverse proxy server.

Apart from privacy, which of course is critical to some use-cases, it seems to me that self-hosted solutions are actually more expensive than simply using Dropbox or Google Drive, of course depending on how many users are onboarded etc. For example, 3TB of space on AWS S3 will set you back about $70/month for starters, not counting bandwidth, transactions etc. That's the equivalent of 4 users on a Dropbox business plan out the gate but with a far less sophisticated product and all the overhead of managing your own server. Still, as a personal thing to play with for people who already have their own servers etc. this could be fun to get up and running.

guys this is 10 years old nothing new here.. the new thing is collabora online wich actually works really well and allows to work with multiple people IN one document, but thats no big deal since we allready had some other free open office cloud tools (E-groupware etc) Its just that nobody knows about all this things.. Good to mention is also that u can actually use this as a developer platform for social networks etc since u can install any cms system in nextcloud by installing only one additional app. Btw. i am teacher for -work4.0- so im already teaching just this to all my members to show them some alternatives to google and microsoft..

Nextcloud has always had optional apps you can install. I was using OnlyOffice long before I actually deployed a NextCloud server. Only office desktop is much better. Only Office may not be as robust as Libre Office but it's installable desktop clients are much more lightweight and the files it saves are 100% MS Office compatible. It can also properly open MS Office files with no formatting issues, at least none I ever ran into. I'm actually trying to learn how to deploy encrypted user storage so each member of my family can have an encrypted private folder they can sync with. I know it can do it, I just have to learn how.

I would highly suggest anyone setup nextcloud using the docker image, it's the easiest and most modular way to do it. It saves all your settings/data in a permanent volume so if anything goes wrong you don't lose it. To update, you remove the container and pull the latest image then use docker compose with the same docker compose file and its good to go. The web updater doesn't work from in docker, but I suspect it doesn't work with snap either, only a bare metal install

Nextcloud isn't really -cloud-. if my house and all computers are destroyed in a tornado, flood, or hurricane; or my server totally crashes; my files are lost. What do I do then? For me -cloud- is the security of off-premises multi-site backup as well as sync. Are there some possible security risks to storing my files on Google, AWS, or Microsoft? Yes. But the security of knowing my files are much more likely to survive local catastrophic events is worth the risk.

Well, the text editor thing you showed is not the office integration though. That's just a multi-user text editor they introduced with Nextcloud 17.
If you upgraded from a previous version of Nextcloud to Nextcloud Hub (18) then you need to install the office add-on from the apps section in the admin panel.
Also worth a mention is that they have a bunch of very useful add-ons that can be installed. I love the audio player for example.

Had to fast forward this video quite a bit to see the interesting parts but have to say I-m quite shocked about the text file editing and collaboration functions. That-s way less functionality than Google Docs 8 years ago when it was announced! Holy ---... - Will they EVER be able to come even close to what Google offers? Would hope so, but can barely imagine. -

I wish they'd improve their core functionality rather than add stuff I probably won't use. For example, the preview icons in the web client and (especially) the Android app are way too small. There may be some config I can set to make them bigger, but I would like to see a UI config option for it. (Yeah, I know they're bigger in the gallery.)

As a director for a nonprofit I use nothing but open source and linux. I am impressed with nextcloud, deployed a server, and reccomend it to other nonprofits. I hate how much companies charge nonprofits but also that nonprofits pay that much and just take it. Great video
