The Coronavirus Has Given Us Free Time So Make Use Of It DistroTube The COVID-19 outbreak has caused a worldwide shutdown of non-essential services. Many of us can't go to work, school, sporting events, movie theaters, etc. So we are sitting at home for the next few weeks with a lot of extra time on our hands. What could we be doing with that free time?

Well this is a great low keyed video on what to do with free time. Virus or no Virus these are good ideas! Thank you DT for posting them!
I did take you Awesome Challenge (I know I said I was not going too!) and have been poking at it for the last 2 days! It's ok so far but I don't think it is me... I will give it a week or so on my spare laptop and see how it goes! I have been poking at you RC.LUA and it has helped me figure out some stuff... LOL
As for me, I am 66 and retired and nothing has really changed for me with the -lockdowns-... I do most of my shopping on Amazon or eBay and I only go to the pharmacy twice a month to get my meds and the same with Walmart of JC's food liner. So it is the same to me in a way. Just can not go out and eat that 2 times I go to eat out. Pizza Hut and all the burger places with drive-up are still open for drive-up only, so it is all SOP in my world! :-D

Penetration testing with lmms. I tried it - not on purpose. You can do a lot composing with lilipond or play with chuck and miniaudicle but lmms was the first time I could make something that more than remotely sounded like music. And penetration testing? Ask my neighbors. We got rid of all the cats stealing young birds from their nests. For mature ears, you cannot imagine what sounds those birds actually make. Take a recorder and speed the audio down to 0.4 the speed results in 20 kHz down to 8 kHz. Audacity lets you cut sounds out of the recording and put them into lmms as an instrument you can play. Now I know how they made cats and dogs sing. Have a lot of fun. No more walking. They are going to lock us into our living room soon.

just the title of the video is gospel.
currently going through an Oreilly book on machine learning and re-learning linear algebra and fundamental calculus concepts.
yeah I want to bug out and play video games but this is a rare opportunity: if not now, when?
so we could all bug out on coronavirus news and stress the hell out everyday OR
we could get back to work improving our lives. Getting in shape. Reading. Coming back to a neglected project. Exploring a hobby and giving yourself permission to do it just because you want to.
this is a crappy situation but if we can, let's look for the silver lining and be proactive eh?

Pretty much as soon as I knew I was gonna have a lot more free time on my hands, I started trying to get pci passthrough via vfio to work with my computer so I can play a few multiplayer games with friends which use easy anti cheat. The process was more tedious than anything, especially because the iommu groupings required an acs patched kernel and some more configuration after that when things still weren't separated enough.
Currently working on getting audio to pass through to little avail so far, but in the meantime I have a good enough bluetooth headphone which can play audio via USB.

Also don't spend all your free time messing around with Linux. It's really a time waster hobby. Not as much as watching Netflix all day, but unless you're learning linux stuff to use in a professional capacity(and even then, there is a line to draw), it's not really as important as the vocal minority make it out to be.
Emacs is a time waster too, but if you're a programmer then it's worth it imo. I'm happy using the bog standard Ubuntu release as long as I have my emacs. If the choice is between diving deeper into linux or learning emacs, my vote definitely goes to emacs.

No total lock down in the Netherlands and the weather is nice (except for the strong eastern wind wich is wind chill), so I go outside a lot for some long walks. And after the weekend it's off to work again. I work in a food DC, so work is plenty due to stocking. No social visits is advised due to corona. Stay save Derek and all viewers;)

Yes, I have started learning Doom-Emacs, usually I use VSCode but wanted to try something different and I really loove Doom-Emacs so far. Next thing is I always wanted to try XFCE on my Arch machine, I think this is the best time now :-D

What free time? I work 100% from home all the time, but now my son is home from school with me. I am 100% jealous of everyone talking about free time. Except for those not getting paid.

Hopped from Lubuntu to Arch. It's been an incredible learning experience, but I might hop back onto an Ubuntu distribution if school ever resumes.
