Master and Slave Are Being Removed From Open Source Software - DistroTube Due to the political climate, many organizations and open source projects are removing the terms master and/or slave from their software. GitHub is changing master branches to main branches. Master-slave terminology in regards to drives, file systems, programming languages, etc. are being removed as well. This has caused some debate in the community about whether these changes are good or not. Here's my brief thoughts on the matter Bradley: This is rediculus. Welcome to newspeak. The division is by design to keep people separated into tribes and at each others throats.
This is mentality is what will eventually cause humanities demise on this planet.
What ever happened to -together we stand, divided we fall- or has it lost all meaning.

Here's how it works. 5% of people are sensitive, easily offended and loud -> media rides the wave and creates illusion that everyone cares deeply about these subjects.
I'll tell you what it is, as a person who lived in Asia for 20 years. In the western world lives are a bit too easy and personal rights are overly magnified. Never have I seen such lazy retail/food industry workers for instance, until I landed in America. In most parts of the world where there are far more people than resources, you want to create new things periodically to get offended at, you want your rights? Sure, you can have all of that and I'll give your job away to some other eager applicants. This along with that ACA-5 thing has to be the dumbest shits I've heard lately. Next thing you know people will be protesting against Marriam-Webster for not removing the word master from dictionaries. I'm just 25 btw, in case anyone accuses me of being a conservative boomer.

it makes no difference that they are changing this to main, since somebody already mentioned that, master means master copy not master/slave. I already have set my main branch to be called master in new git default settings. I will continue to use master because this change is pointless it has nothing to do with racism and i don't want to change my habits and terminology on things i learned, when again this change is totally pointless. Sane choices i would support but this is clearly not it. And besides not only this doesn't help, but it will anger part of community because again changing old tradition for nothing, so the change is actually harmful. I just had to let it out.

Instead of going outside doing real charity work, doing real activism for real change and instead going to helping people in real need, you have a group of white kids feeling themselves good by thinking that they are changing the world by doing things that 99.9999% of do NOT give a damn and do nothing to make the lives of everyone better. But the corporations that they work are robbing poor people by not paying their taxes, doing stocks buybacks and bribing politicians to their benefit and they NEVER complain about that.

Being from Bangladesh, I don-t know if my opinion on this matters much. But I think this is a bit too far fetched. Overdoing things will just take the focus away from the original issue. And doing these meaningless things give organizations fake sense of accomplishment that they have done something about the situation while in reality they have done nothing.

whoever thought doing that would be a good idea, are the real racists. no developer finds master-slave terminology racist. and those are all over the engineering fields. everywhere. they dont mean any human-society bs. they simply mean what they are supposed to be meant under different contexts. seriously !

Doing the change but keeping it to less characters without changing effective meaning; using Dom and Sub. Also, instead of allow-list and block-list (which don-t always translate right), I think we should use Keylist (you have a key to enter) and Locklist (you are locked out).

I honestly agree with you more than I thought you would. But legitimately, if GitHub or whoever decides they're gonna rename master to main or whatever, who cares? Why should I care? Regardless of the reasons, it's two words. It has literally no impact on anything.

How is dark mode even legal? Huh! That's oppression. You are making the color black as -back-ground color. That's subjugation! You are promoting white -fore-ground color. What the hell! This is racist. This is oppression!

I'll need to remember this for when I have my Main Degree in Computer Science. Otherwise I'll end up being socially excluded, like Anakin when they didn't make him a Jedi Pro.
Now listening to: Metallica - Ventriloquist
