I am one of them fan boys of Linux Mint.. Mate in particular because it does as I like and fast without spending 3 days and 10 pots of coffee forcing it to. It's true it is a newbe distro and yes I do agree it's more newbe friendly then Ubuntu. But it's also more compact, uses less memory, and it's similar to that of windows thus all the above is a great place to start if coming from Windows. Ubuntu uses Snap packages, and has a much different, if confusing at first interface. It also hogs more ram and does it's own thing with Snap packages. Nearly every major function of the OS has a GUI or is automated such as updates, but so does Mint, if not more so. I think while I disagree with the author he made some very decent points. It's just not worth losing my shirt over. I am a libertarian leaning conservative, believe me I understand how these things go. My fellow libertarians will get in to a verbal fight over word salads. They read headlines just like I think that guy did and assume without really researching. What I have found is these people are simply not worth your time. You are far more charitable then myself in that regard. Like you I an all about keeping fairly anonymous, I like protecting my self and my data because it's mine. Yet, if you go completely dark how are you ever going to help others? It's like me I am a fairly private guy, even on FB. There is absolutely no doubt of what I think and where I stand on there and if you don't know, you've not paid attention. I have them fans too.

Regarding Linux mint, someone correct me if i'm wrong, but if they weren't a real distro and only maintaining Cinnamon, they give up some control that is valuable to get the user experience for a new Linux desktop user right, such as being able to say no to snaps and controlling how their software manager handles installation from different sources so that there aren't conflicts and is more or less seamless. It just comes down to what their goals are and they probably think they can do a better job of providing an easier to adjust to Windows experience than Canonical.

When I've used Mint, I used the MATE desktop.
But right now, I'm running WSL2 (Surface Pro) and Gentoo Arm64 on a raspberry pi 4 with dwm (sakaki's pre-built -lite- image for RPi 64bit, but pre-built Gentoo can make plenty of sense on popular -monolithic- hardware). I'm thinking of dual-booting Gentoo on my Surface Pro, with the Gentoo on Pi serving as a terrific intro to Gentoo.
Oh, and we've got an Ubuntu 18.04 server, since our backup service explicitly supports it. Also stuck a gitbucket server on it.

About the anonymity. Yes, you chose to put your face out there, but you could still want to make political activism for example while you're anonymous. So you can put all the content out there with your face on and keep an anonymous side separate. Which tbh is what anyone would actually do, I doubt anyone is 100% anonymous online, it's just that someone might want to keep part of their online activity separate

DT I love the the way you present your opinions, and I take them as they are, opinions. I try some recommendations by myself, and if I found than they fit better to my use case, I make the switch, if not, I just keep my workflow. No need to trash you if you say something is better or worse, it's your opinion, I have mine, period. Grown up people should be able to understand that

You should absolutely try out ArchCraft this should be a good alternative for Arch newbies that are still scared of the tty or that does not want to bother going trough a long installation. ArchCraft is made to be riced easily. bspwm and Openbox are installed and are already riced a bit. And this made by the creator of Rofi ! I think you should absolutely check it out

Hey DT, what do you think about Cortana? Cortana is a voice assistant in the rolling release distro called windows 10 with a nice and slow cmd.exe shell and a resource heavy desktop environment called aero. Aero is extremely resource heavy, but hey, unused ram is wasted ram right?

Trying to compress the terminal/shell issue:
A terminal (emulator) accepts/inputs characters (one by one) and outputs characters.
A shell accepts text and outputs characters (by a medium of the terminal (emulator) it runs -on-).

I think that Emacs is bloted, is slow for ex. my laptop with i5 8th gen, I can't understand why this bloted software are using over for ex. VSCode (OSS) which is much faster

I enjoy using Linux, and I am tech savvy, but I don't want to use the terminal or any commands. I'm more of a mouse point and click on menus user even though I know my tech.
