Ji--
I am a vegetarian (and this is the third time I have openly stated it on the internet, so you know how serious this argument is for me) and I believe that killing is bad under all circumstances. I hate guns, they were designed to kill people and animals. What I am a fan of though is torture (no, I am not kidding). You can kill someone remorselessly from the inside by driving them insane with pain. I am disappointed that torture is deemed worse than murder. After all, by murder, YOU eliminate that person, by torturing them, you only help them to the grave, when or how they get there is upto them. I like to carry some form of short-range non-destructice chemical weapon with me or a knife. You don't have to kill the person to get rid lf them. As per my rights, I don't care what my government tells me. I do what I deem right and what I would be ok with if other people did to me. My final argument against guns is that in the U.S. there are far more shootings than in states where guns are regulated. In an ideal state, you wouldn't need guns at all. Besides, killing a person with a knife or chemical weapon should be much more fun than killing them with a gun, which is so fast they won't even notice it. If someone upsets me so bad that I would want to hurt them really badly, I would torture them insane for what they did, not shoot them.

Bad analogy. You can't kill people with software. The right to life is more fundamental than the right to bear arms. Being gunned down by a classmate at your school is a pretty fundamental violation of your rights. There is no such thing as an absolute -natural- right. No one believes that anymore. There is, for instance, no absolute right to property, once thought (e.g. by John Locke) to be a God-given -natural- right. That was rejected long ago by the Supreme Court when it overturned Lochner vs NY. I own a house. I can't barbecue because it's against local air pollution ordinances. I can't raise chickens in my backyard either. Talking about absolute rights, especially to guns, is silly. Rights are granted and limited with a view to a common good determined by society. They change. The right to privacy used to encompass the right to inflict physical punishment on one's wife and women had no right to prosecute their husbands for rape. Religious sects no longer have right to withhold public education from their children. The Second Amendment granted the right to bear arms not as -natural,- but as -necessary to the security of a free State.- By the way, the First Amendment isn't first because so much importance was attached to it. It was originally the third and your sacred right to bear arms came fourth!

I'm glad you can see through the _-democrat/republican, liberal/conservative, left/right-_ dichotomy. It's quite sad that most people fall into this factions war and the groupthink traps where they don't even listen to those they oppose, and blindly refuse to ever agree with them on anything. And indeed, in practice all those things end up being the same thing. I would add -atheist/religious- to it, as the overlap there is also pretty much 1:1. I would rather call it a false-dichotomy, though.
I usually say, ideas have no sides. They aren't associated with any ideologies or polical factions, it's the ideologies and political factions that associate themselves with certain ideas.
Unfortunately, a lot of people don't see that.

I used to advocate for gun control. But the gun nuts won me over. They had better arguments, and the data was on their side. As I began learning a bit about guns, it became alarming how uneducated most gun control advocates are on the topic (including my former self). People think that semiautomatics are machine guns. That would be okay on its own, but these people are cocksure supporters of legislation to ban semiautomatics on the basis of that misinformation. Ignorance plus zeal is a _dangerous_ combination.

It's like you almost get it but you contradict yourself halfway in, committing a crime even a felony shouldn't disqualify you from having a right to personal protection it only takes one arbitrary law to be passed for you to lose that little bit of agency you have. When you accept caveats to your freedom they will be abused no matter how law abiding you think you are, most attempts at privacy circumvention are examples of just that because like you said ALL politicians are crooked.

The tendency to go along with everything one's side/party says is a major problem. Blind partisanship cannot result in a healthy democracy. Someone's views on climate change shouldn't be predictive of their views on abortion. They are completely unrelated subjects. And yet you can predict someone's position on one if you know the other, with >80% accuracy. That is startling.

It's cool that in US you have right to carry guns, it's neither bad or good, just another way to do think about things. However, free software is way over that, everybody has its own reason to contribute with it's own view of the world. And that's the coolest thing about it.
BTW, I laughed hard when you told that a regular sized rifle is ideal for kids. You are just amazing.

Well not exactly in my case.
I like free software and the communities behind it, but I wouldn't allow just anyone to buy a rifle which is definitely made for killing other humans. Thats so much freedom that anyone could abuse it, and let's be honest, this is not a rare case in USA.

Alright... Trumps out of office... and I agree with you on Guns! If you believe in software freedom you should back it up with assault shotgun freedom... Media already thinks we're all hackers anyway, might as well live up to their expectations!
USA! USA!

Yes you have freedom of speech but there are limits to it. For example if you yell -fire- or something to get others out of the building stat and there is no fire (or other reason to get to get out of the building stat), freedom of speech will not protect you.
