Ok, I'm using ZorinOS (think it is also based on ubuntu) and had something to print, but just didn't want to, it threw out errors all lights blinking, as there wasn't any paper and ink, so tried to stop to see which ink cartridge is empty -> nothing. And yeah, it also was saying the print is completed even though nothing was printed.
So first I removed/purged cups and deleted the etc/cups directory. And reinstalled it. Just reinstalling cups wasn't enough. Needed to also install cups-daemon !
Well now it should work you'd think, as I the computer sees the printer. Nope, it doesn't. Manually searched for printer in the printer gui and to my surprise it finds it, but with a 2 at the end! Now it works.
With deleting cups I probably deleted all the ppd files, even though I tried manually installing them, but failed.
It was weird as the printer Epson Stylus SX110 has a scanner installed too and just copying documents worked fine.

Q: I've been fighting with this for years. I've chased Alice down the rabbit hole (Mint & Ubuntu forums). Help me Obe-Wan. You're my only hope.. Issue 1 Printing any .PDF on an HP Printer Laserjet 3030. It's painfully slow. Like 5 to 10 minutes painfully slow. Issue 2. Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. How do I disable the printer discovery without it messing up my other apps like Libre Office which used to open fast... Since I found a disable-printer discovery fix... is also now painfully slow to open Libre Office and slow to print as well... It's almost enough to make me turn back to the dark side (Windows) I've used Ubuntu for years... but I'm very much a noob.

Thank you DT. Teaching is one of your gifts. By now it would seem that every linux distro would recognize the value of easy printer installation and so be prepared with necessary utilities already baked-in. Scanner installation can also be problematic even in Debian-based distros. Ask Ubuntu to the rescue. All users eventually need printer & scanner capabilities in the linux desktop.

I got a wireless Printer (Canon) and on Zorin it immediately connected without a cable. BUT if I press print on a file nothing at all happens.
The Printer is correctly listed but there is just no reaction whatsoever.
It was not that important cause I don't need to print a lot and I still had Windows around so I din't try to figure it out yet.

Hey -dt. I'm a computer engineering student.
Should a person (especially students like me) who watches you and people like you, who are constantly promoting and spreading awareness of FOSS, FSF, etc. study hard and apply for internship and jobs at Microsoft? I am not talking specifically for Microsoft but the all the other tech gaints too.

Thanks for the video! I am actually Ubuntu user but I could not use my Canon printer for a while. I guess my previous google searches ended up manual setup methods. I even tried to install some packages manually but I could not solve the problem and gave up... Now, I added my printer from Settings -> Printers easily. Thanks again!

Hey DT, how do I install a scanner on linux? Cups detects it and it works as a printer but I have no idea how to get the scanner function on it to work with linux. I have a canon ts8300 series printer and I use arch. Could anyone point me towards a scanning program and the correct drivers if needed?

Perfect timing! I'm using Arch Linux and I was wondering why it couldn't detect any printers. After watching this video, I understand everything!
I was so used to Linux Mint and Pop!_OS that just had printer support out of the box, and I was wondering why it just didn't work!

My parents have Manjaro, the printer shows up, all the drivers are installed, etc, but when they print an OnlyOffice doc, it just prints a sheet with dots down one side. Any thoughts on what might be missing? Its a network printer, Epson ET-3750, I believe.

Yeah, tell that my HP 1018 on Mint 19 and 21. =(
It finds it, it installs it but not printing anything with it.
For me - only going to HP website and downloading fresh version of hplip and installing it helped.
Both, for Mint 19 and 21
