Five Screenshot Applications For Linux DistroTube Which screenshot tool do I use? Well, today I will discuss several screenshot programs that I have used on Linux. While they all have some similar functionality, there are small differences that may make one of these apps the right tool for you. ERRATA: When I show the region select with Flameshot, I was using the appimage version of Flameshot. he appimage was messed up, which is why I switched to the standard package, but I forgot to re-record the clip with the region select. Oops. So all of the circles surrounding the rectangle selection should have displayed icons. Those icons let you do things to edit the image. Apparently the appimage was having trouble displaying those icons. - https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-screenshot - GNOME Screenshot - https://apps.kde.org/spectacle/ - KDE Spectacle - https://github.com/flameshot-org/flameshot - Flameshot - https://github.com/naelstrof/maim - Maim - https://www.gimp.org/ - Gimp - https://gitlab.com/dwt1/dmscripts - DT's dmscripts (available in AUR)

02:55 -I think it's a bit of waste of time to include those features- (those meaning stuff like simple editing features in Screenshot tools)
I think it's the other way around, imho it's a major time waste to save a screenshot, open gimp, draw an arrow to the stuff I want to highlight, saving the picture, uploading the picture, pasting the link (alteranitvely copying it to the clipboard and pasting the picture to sth like Discord), with tools like flameshot, all of this is a matter of seconds. It would take magnitudes longer going the long way around Gimp.

15:20 I use flameshot because it works in all systems I use (windows and multiple linux) and I can configure a keyboard shortcut to edit in GIMP. Sometimes even, I start editing in flameshot and then I finish the editing in GIMP. All with lossless quality until I finally save as jpg.
For flameshot too, I use both in scripts and I use the GUI. I do both ways depending on my needs

Why did you forget to mention Shutter in this review? It's definitely one of the best (if not the best) screenshot tools available for Linux. Screenshot tools shipped with desktop environments are too simple, while using GIMP for screenshot editing seems to me a bit awkward and slow

You can combine flameshot with the keyboard shortcuts to launch it from your keyboard which is very useful, I'm actually using Hyper+C (capture) to trigger flameshot, very useful indeed to anotate something in the screen to shre it with your colleagues in order to explain them something.

Actualy basic ability to edit screenshot inside screenshot app is very usefull when you need to make simple quick annotation, because it saves my time and I don't need to save the image and then open it in other application just because I want to add a couple arrows

Hmm, I have four keyboards with 42 keys or less and I still have prtscr on each of them. In fact, I have all keys from full-size except for pause and capslock. Maybe you should try to actually configure your keyboard instead of using the defaults.

Does anyone know of a Linux application that will take a screenshot of a scrolling window (similar to Sangit), I've not found any that really do it, only the firefox screen capture shows that function, it works maybe 97% of the time ..

I rarely need screenshots, and whenever I do, I simply press the PrtSc key on my keyboard and it takes the full screenshot and I cut out unnecessary area using Gimp. Didn't know there is this much to screenshots.

spectacle lets you screenshot single monitors just fine. there's literally a keybind in the system settings. i don't know if the GUI offers the option as well if you'd actually have a multi-monitor setup.

Spectacle's annotation features are nice if you're taking screenshots of something for your Twitter or IG and you want to add some context to the image. Having it all there in one app is pretty handy.
