While there definitely are risks of surveilence and/or ads in the software or subscription services etc. with the current way they do it there are also some positive sides.
If the car was completely open source anyone could tweak their car and might make a mistake that causes injury. A phone with an open source software with some faulty settings will not harm anyone, but a car with the wrong settings may. The masses are probably not ready for the responsibility yet, even if some tech savvy are and they are annoyed that they cant tinker with their expensive equipment themselves. Totally understandable.
Also there are complications regarding legal action. Is it Teslas fault for making a dangerous car even if someone else tweaked the software and their adjusted version of autopilots runs someone over? Would they be allowed to even have autopilot hardware installed if that happened? Would regulators be able to understand the difference and set the correct type of regulations not to sabotage innovataion? Would the hackers be able to themselves use their own selfdriving car for surveilence of their own enemies? Could a stalker follow and record someone? Could the car be used as a remote weapon?
Open sourcing a car isn't as simple as letting individuals use their own equipment. If there are bugs or exploits (which there often are even if code is well reviewed) there might be remote hacking attempts that causes accidents or injuries both for the car user and bypassers.
Open sourcing the car software is probably a good thing in the future, but probably a bad thing short term. Let the open source software be developed slowly, carefully and deliberately for cars so that it is very well-made before it is put into a car.
regarding MaaS: If people can't afford purchasing & owning a car, but can afford a subscription service, why not provide this service? It gives poorer people a chance to have a higher living standard. It does not take away living standard from current car owners, they can still own their car. If Tesla becomes dominant and suddenly raises prices or sells collected data then that will create a market opportunity for a competitor to come in and sell another car that either doesnt surveil or doesnt have ads, or can be bought cheaply without the self driving hardware and at cheaper costs if Tesla decided to be greedy.
There are of course risks, but there are also opportunities for improvement of the people, not just the company owners.
Nuclear invention also enabled both cheap clean electricity and crazy powerful bombs. Heavy software integration of cars with sensors enable data collection for positive and negative use cases. If/when a company goes too much on the dark side the people will choose others and/or governments (in open societies) will regulate over time to limit the greedy/bad behaviour.
Great video to point out the potential risks, just don't forget to mention the potential benefits so people don't completely leave the topic, just like focus on only negative aspects of blockchain would make people completely leave that topic, and it seems you know about the positive sides of that tech as well =)

None of this is surprising if you understand computers and technology. Do you want a car that crashes of it's own fault to get fixed and be safer in the future? So they need all the data to analyze especially with self driving to see if the algorithms need any tweaking. When you know there are 6 high definition cameras on board and Tesla has reason to have this data for analysis, it just makes sense that there will be 6 streams of high definition video to analyze in the event of an accident or evasive maneuver. There is no other way to improve the self driving or the car's safety features. That being said, if Tesla was collecting phone logs and text messages, that would be no help in making the product safer and is un-necessary, probably un-ethical.

I agree with your argument that Tesla should be open source but as the company scales and is trying to gain trust does it make sense to do that? If it opens its platform it would be the wild west with lots of accidents on the road. Proprietorship over their software allows them to safely scale until they become the dominant brand. All eyes are on Tesla right now and any mistake they make will be all over the media. Perhaps they can open source their platform after they've gained approximately more than 80% market share and are therefore an established dominant brand. They're only about 3% of the way now and still got a lot to do.

I can't afford a Tesla nor am I a Musk fan. But I'm looking forward to cheap self driving taxis to replace car ownership.
However, in the distant long term this could be bad. As once car ownership mostly ends, Tesla might lack any significant competition and be free to Jack up the taxi prices to higher than even car ownership levels.
On the other hand, I reckon other self driving taxis could still exist as competition to prevent this. Just like how Facebook still has competition from other social media.

Having a silent passenger in the car at all times is a scary thought & this goes even beyond the terrible privacy of a mobile device, considering that such a vehicle can cost 100x more.
Given that Tesla is doing this, others will of course follow (if they have not already. so your car is no longer a safe haven, even less so than your home. Off-grid is sounding better by the day.

That's why i will never buy a new car especially an electric sh-t car i prefer old one with a big combustion engine they don't have much of useless electronics and still work fine sometimes better than new ones
Diesel for future like Greta Crapberg would say -

The problem has not yet arrived yet and this guy is jumping on the potential of there might be a chance, according to that logic nothing should ever be made, because we'll it can turn evil one day, stop using your knives everybody someone might try to hurt you with it.

My first question is why cars should be like mobile phones with software updates and all other jargons. Strange. Yes I support electric ones for cleaner environment, but gosh we already have a certified tracking device in our pockets, which is more than enough.

-Amazon is not just a marketplace for third-party sellers-! Huh yeah man, from day one to date, they-ve earned more money by selling directly than through the 3rd party marketplace. -

Every company is doing this. Each new vehicle operates on sensors and the computers are always sending data to the car company servers. There is no way to prevent this also.
