people think you need a ton of pcie lanes for everything. its just not true. theres only 4 3. 0 lanes from cpu to motherboard but if you put a couple m. s ssds and sound card and a capture card etc and you wont be bottlenecked in any way that effects application performance. maybe if you have 2 m. 2's in raid and are copying to a faster device or something but that just means a very slightly slower transfer time. youre still talking about emptying a large drive very fast. all your apps performance and such will be exactly the same. software performance monitoring apps show that even under heavy use the pcie 3 dmi link only gets maxed out like. 5% of the time and thats with m. 2 raid and video editing.
was arguing with a guy because he said he couldnt use all his stuff with mainstream. he said he had a sata raid card that was 8x and another that was 4x and an m. 2 ssd and a gpu. he could have went x8\x8 with his gpu and x8 raid and used the bottom chipset slot for the other raid card and m. 2 is on the motherboard. so it would all work.
but he didnt wanna bottleneck his gpu. wow 2 fps lost because of 8x instead of 16x. ok.
so i said run the gpu 16x, put the 8x in the bottom 4x slot and just take half the speed. it would still be as fast at transfers as a high end samsung nmve ssd. then use the second m. 2 slot and put an adapter in it to turn it into a 4x pcie slot for the second raid card. but then his 8x raid card wouldnt run full speed. boo hoo.
i asked him what he used the raid cards for. he said his anime collection. HIS FRICKIN ANIME COLLECTION! why do you need an 8x transfer speed for anime! hes basically just using raid to combine multiple hardrives into 1 for ease of use. running a 8x raid card at 4x would be WAYYY more than he would EVER need! plus the mobo has a 6 drive sata controller at least. thats at least a handfull of drives on 3 raid\sata controllers.
if you wanna run a computer with 30 drives in it and have them all run at 3-6gbps transfer speeds, then maybe you might wanna pick up an hedt system? i mean a lower end HEDT board doest really cost more than the z390 boards and they are more than enough for a highly overclocked intel 8-10 core or a stock 16 core amd cpu. and you get the cpu lanes. amd HEDT cpus can be had with 16 cores for 3-400 on sale and intel HEDT cpu cost about the same as their mainstream counterparts if you get 6-8 cores.
the guy is just wanting something to complain about or he just bought the wrong thing and new something else was what he needed. if he had done the suggestion i made he would have never saw a bottleneck ever

Maybe someone can help me. I have been upgrading my old computer and something isn't quiet right. I have i74770k stock, 24gb ddr3 1600, cooler master h500 case, corsair 1000w gold power supply. I went from Intel onlboard graphics to a sapphire nitro 5700xt. It kept crashing. After 15 bsod on all games, I sent it back and got Asus rog strix 2080 super. 32- 1440p lg 144hz monitor. Temps are always less than 62c. Clean install win 10 on ssd. Games on HDD. Used dduninstaller on drivers before I loaded the new GPU. All my games run less than 20 fps on low 1440p. I drop it to 1080p low to get 30-35fps so I can play them. I have tried the internet fixes with no luck. Any help would be great

I love it when people say, well, people buy brand X just because of the brand. . Hey, newsflash for you, YES, it takes years to get a brand to mean something, and when you finally get people there, it means something. It means that based on previous generations, people will buy new products from said brand because of good luck, and guess what, brands also go down, there's always inertia of course. So, yes, I would buy a Sony, or a Rolex, a porsche, logitech, Dr marteens, eneloop batteries, 3m film, and so on, they have a track record which took them years to achieve. That's exactly how it works. Consistency + inertia is key here.

i turn off all those spectre and meltdown patches. all of them. the actual performance difference is tiny but i do it anyway. not worried. its mostly server guys that need to worry. my credit card has fraud protection and they can have my porn if they want it. as far as personal info, they can either write a genius level program to use spectre and spends hours trying to get my info. or they can get a list of 50, 000 names and socical security numbers for 1000 bux off the dark web. which do you think they will do?

I ran a Intel based windows 10 - That was an upgraded from win7.
Then I took out my motherboard, and put in a new X570 with a ryzen 3700X, I also swapped my old 390X GPU with a 5700XT, without using DDU.
Then I ran some benchmarks on firestrike and the heaven one.
Then I made a completely fresh reinstall. ran the benchmarks. no performance increase AT ALL! If Anything it was a slight degredation - but purely within margin of error.

I play with a 4K 50-inch TV on my desk. Playing games is awesome in 4k. It's very immersive. Having the Lord widescreen gives you more of a feeling of being there because it's almost outside your peripheral vision. Maybe the fact that it's 4K resolution makes everything kind of smaller so it's not really in your face. if you had a 50-inch 1080p TV then that would probably be overwhelming since everything would be oversized looking.

Wow, the answer to the question of life: who put the water bottle on the table for the intro? Regarding the 1080ti, first I need to say that I-m an unabashed Nvidia fanboy who loves the RTX line but the fact that the 1080ti has 11GB VRAM vs the 8GB on all 2080-s (besides the 2080ti) can be great for hi resolution textures and the bandwidth on the 1080ti is superior.

if you can get a 1080 ti cheaper then the 5700xt then bet but if the 5700xt is cheaper then the 1080 ti then get the 5700xt. the 5700xt is within 10% of the 1080 ti performance, were not talking about alot of frames guys so just get the best deal on which ever card you can find and you will be happy.

Software to utilize PCIe 4. 0: Virtualization: VMWare or Hyper-V with plenty of storage. When you have multiple VMs on a virtualization host, the biggest bottleneck is your storage. A good storage controller and plenty of storage is the solution and virtualization will take best advantage of it.

We are struggling to still fully support 4k. 8k isn't really of much interest at this point.
Also dark games are not great for Ray Tracing unless you have good outdoor lights shining. Unreal Tournament would be nice. Doom 3 original. The older shooters from early-mid 2000s would be good.
