In this episode the gang is joined by special guest Brad Shoemaker of Nextlander/Tech Pod fame to chat about how much VRAM is necessary for PC gaming, the onslaught of bad PC ports recently, the future of real-time path tracing, and of course we answer your questions live! jon: Crisis looked heads and shoulders better it was a huge leap in fidelity , RT is a matter of side by side comparison look at it at the right angle and go oh yeah .. i can see what its doing.. not sure i care , it makes things look different maybe more real but its not even always better. Ray tracing as it is now simply inst close to the impact crisis represented.

Of course they knew about bigger vram requirements amd and nvidia a like, years before. That itself is not the bad thing its just the way of visual progress. , Both of these companies works very closesly with other companies as Sony or Microsoft(dx+xbox), in amd case its kinda obvious their technology literaly sits in consoles , when new console is released AMD certainly have to fullfill not only their ideas , but especialy requirements what company as Sony expected from their architecture as prefered uplfit for new rendering capabilities in gaming (Sony manager even mentioned it , few days ago in interview RDNA is pretty much ideal for us its giving us the freedom in rendering, we will stick with amd tech in the future (ps6) , however our cooperation with nvidia is also great currently . ), New next-gen titles tons of textures and geometry growing up too milions of polygons (unreal 5 nanite) such an insane uplift in visual is requiring more vram (storage) what a kinder surprise it has nothing ot do with lazynes. Same as targeting, higher resolutions and finaly RT effects in gaming (literaly gigabytes of vram just flyes off by using only this one)... Just an idea that Nvidia didnt knew it before? especialy about RT requirements on vram ? Come on, of course they knew very well what will happen after 4 years of marketing their own products based on RT performance and with their self designed RT technology. They had to know what will happen. Dont be naive its just bussines :D, customer who is buing 3080 and 4080 two years later is living form of wet dreams for any company. I dont know why people just cant let go that emotional fan status. Doesnt metter if its fan of pc/console gaming ,fan of any company or fan of whatever... its never usefull always just self distracting for the sake of piece hey its sounds pretty or it hey looks good ,any of these doesnt metter when its obviously wrong and doesnt makes any sense.

the 4070 ti isa 196bit bus, which is exactly what the 960,1060,2060 and 3060 had. so the 4070 ti to me is really a m60 series card they are trying to push by renameing it in the stack. what makes this incredibly sad is that nvidia sdidnt class it as a 4070 ti they called it a 4080 12 gig. And even nw your talking 800 to 1000 uk pounds. this is the reason in my 30-40 years pc gameing i am now mainly series x game pass and on a series x and own a ps5. i always want the second best iin the stack but im not paying 12000 uk pounds for it and that would be a 4080 16 gig even if mores law is dead. dont care. i will return if priceing ever becomes resonable and whan gpu manufactors realise scalping prices after a pandemic doesnt win over people. niether witll a 4070 for 600 pounds or 400 pounds as thats in my opinion gona be a 50 series card rebadged. i fell that nvidia has betrayed the gameing comunity. but nvidia dont care their main business isnt gpu sales now.

11:30 Dude why do you think 1080p is equal to Vram?, that's not the issue here dude, it's on the graphics side of the game, you want realism? then you need more Vram for that and not for resolution, you need to understand that PBR textures material alone takes at least 40-100+ megs of rams per objects and the more you want to populate in to your scene that surely needs to be loaded in ram, even if we talk about 2K texture that isint even enough to be honest, but then again you're looking at 1080p which is already not good in person to look at 2K textures let alone if you load 4K texture which much sharper, then you have MSAA/FXAA or TAA that adds extra ram so yeah dont misunderstand the benefit of larger ram in 1080p users...

crisis was exciting because going from old graphics to new is a huge jump in visual satisfaction. For ray tracing you just had an entire conversation about how it's 'boring' looking because it looks more like real life. Here's the thing. Video games ARE NOT real life. So while some of the ray tracing i've seen has some impressive visuals, most of the time I don't even think it looks better. The massive processing expense to get a puddle of water to reflect the environment properly has very little practical interest to me compared to just the pure core improvement of say each next gen unreal engine.

My two cents on the VRAM thing being mainly Nvidia...they don't want a repeat of the 1080Ti. Powerful card with lots of VRAM for the time. Even when the RTX3000 series release, one of their press conferences Jensen even said it was safe to finally upgrade. They are trying not to make a card that is too good because why would anyone buy their scalper priced new cards? NV only cares about 1 thing...money. They already lied about how much they made from mining, un-launched the 4080 cough 4070Ti because people were upset at the price...so if they have to knee cap their own products...they will do it.

The importance in some cases of nvidia driver settings as a temp. fix. I also listened to what panjo has to share. Weird that nvidia doesn't share these optimizations (me bro bro wanted to buy a new gpu because uncharted 4 pc version wasn't running smooth on his gtx 1080 strix, i7 6700K, 16gb (fixed it partially though). Having enough and the right combo of Os/16gb Vram/ram/cpu/nvme/mobo/psu to find a ballance is a challange now a days and upgrading is a given (beyond rec specs). Enjoyed the podcast

The new AMD GPU's score super well for Resolve, kind of hoping the mid range AMD GPU's have some extra VRAM. My 3060 TI keeps hitting the VRAM wall with Resolve, you just crash when VRAM go's to far.
Kind of not sure if I need to go back to Resolve V17 as it uses less VRAM or slug it out on V18 till I get a new GPU.

I'm happy for pathtracing as it will only become mainstream when 500 and below graphic cards will run games with minimal performance costs. Until then RT off and enjoy exploring, combat and beautiful graphics without RT. I own a 3080ti bought into the marketing and realised it's just marketing.

I commented on the 3 card PCworld shootout video as well (thank you for vid). My budget like Brad says was under 300, I already waited several years to upgrade so I went with a 6650XT at 8 gigs. I will turn down the settings. Sure I want more VRAM, but I bought what I could justify in my budget.

Would have been nice to have heard about AMDs GDC coverage and all the technologies and software they talked about. That could really help push things forward from a different perspective and the PC and even console space going forward

27:37 it was Virtuos that ported Horizon Zero Dawn to PC as the support studio for the PS4 original. Nixxes were brought on after the release to help with the patches as their first project officially for Sony.

Nvidia broadcast's RTX Voice is kinda cool to have as a free option for Krisp, but Krisp is available and not very expensive, and the RTX Video thing was always pretty shit so you probably wouldn't use it anyway

Not only are you going to need a 4090 play this but you're also going to need to turn on our frame generation technology to artificially create new frame so it doesn't look like a stuttering mess
reply

That's like 3 or 4 AAA games in less than a year that shatter 8gb Vram, even 12gb at times.
Hindsight AMD RDNA2 was the better choice unless you got a 3090.
