This guy has some great videos but this is not one of them. Twenty five years experience in Photoshop tells me there are much better ways of doing this. Slower maybe, but better. Blending the hair with the background ( which effectively is whats going on here ) will leave the thinner edges of the hair looking semi transparent. It might work reasonably well on blonde hair or black hair but anything in between, not great. Looks good in the video but get closer and this method looks dodgy.

Love this guy. But why not just Select color grey then fill with clear? Use any solid background color.
