Thank you so fricking much! I am used to older photoshop where Select and Mask wasn't a thing, and from what I remember it would automatically make very sharp edges. And I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to get sharper edges at all. I've been editing pokeballs for days now, and always there would be this little bit of red at the top and white at the bottom coming through the pattern I put over it. And then I came across this video. Now I know how to make those blurred edges sharp so I get no weird color bleeding! Kina sad that I now know how to get it perfect so I want to go back and redo them all, but I think it will be worth it in the end.
Thanks a bunch!

Trying to do this in Photoshop 2021 (version 22. x) is such a huge hassle it's not really worth it.
It's weird that with far more powerful computers, Photoshop is not able to handle real time preview of how any of these sliders will look, so in Photoshop 2021 you have to adjust some sliders, apply the changes, then look at the picture to see if it looks alright. Does it not look good? Undo, open the select and mask dialogue and try different slider settings. Rinse and repeat until you realize it's just faster to take out the brush tool and just paint down the rough edges.
Sad to say that Photoshop is not as great as it once was.

I've been doing this in PhotoShop for over 20 years but I never layer masks!
Coming from a 3D background, I know bluring a B&W image makes a displacement. So adding contrast and adjusting the brightness creates a pure B&W outline once more and the brightness adjusts where the edge is. Then I'd just erase the parts that have lost sharp corners

Hi, this is brilliant, but after 2: 37 Sec post adding a mask when I am trying to click on select and mask i am getting the back ground along with it though I ensured all those selection that you made are in place, not sure where am I going wrong using adobe photoshop 2021

When I enter select and mask I do not see view modes or magic sliders as you do. I am only allowed to use the tool to select on the image itself. How do I get the sliders as you have them? I was sure to select the mask layer.
reply

I usually create a duplicate of the base image and then raise the contrast so that the quick select has an easier time finding the edges, and then once selected switch back to the original image and go from there.

In every video the detailed explanation makes me understand the concept. And the quick summary, in the end, very powerful that concept sticks in the mind. You are always my SuperStart.

This technique is simple, so simple in fact that I didn't know it existed right there. Thank you for making it more apparent.

Thanks a lot man
I've been looking through the wrong videos and finally found a good video, now atleast my images dont have huge jagged lines

Why can't I just use the pen tool directly? in this case it would be more effective? in what cases this method could be useful? Thanks
reply

Thank you! This video was really helpful for a beginner like me who tried to fix manually the edges with the eraser and brush tool.
reply

very smooth and clear. But as a beginner, I found myself with these layers and masks, and I do not know how to proceed after that!
reply

Woah, first time I'm hearing that I can shift + paint. I only thought that Paint Tool SAI only had this feature.
reply

ok then but how do you cut out the entire thing and paste on on a different layer after you are done?
reply

What an incredible tutorial! Extraordinarily clear explanation and totally not boring! Thanks a lot for sharing!
reply

Oooh so thats how they make brush size bigger and smaller
I used to think that they use extra tool xD
