we're going to learn how to use the smudge tools to refine your edges along with some masking and selection tricks Vermillion: it doesn't work with the cutout image, It can't even create a black and white mask layer just pure white, and worst the smudge tool doesn't work. What your showing is an image with a background then you can put a black and white mask but how about for an already cutout image how to SMOOTH THE EDGES it doesn't even create a BLACK AND WHITE mask, to begin with so COMPLICATED! It's easier for you to explain things because you already know PHOTOSHOP but for a beginner VIEWER like me it DOESN'T MAKE A SENSE.

Another method: I can't speak for Adobe terminology but in GIMP there is a blending mode (for brush tools) called Color Erase which converts the chosen foreground color into transparency (and similar colors to partial transparency. So if the background is one consistent tone, just eyedrop that color then color-erase the fringes around the subject. It is even reversible (via opposite blend mode, Behind, which functions like painting normally on a below layer.

next time why not COMPLETE the tutorials from cutting out the image SO IT WILL MAKE SENSE to a beginner just like me and I won't even have to fix everything and figure out everything on myself. Seriously? you can't possibly teach anyone if you don't know the basics yourself don't jump into your expertise we can't read your mind or know your experience from us

Great tutorial. It is something that everyone has encountered so I find it very very useful. I am curious how didn't you mention the Feather option in properties which almost automatically will remove the fringe all around. Feather has has the ability to be edited as well with contrast and gives sharp or soft results depending on what numbers you entered.

I tried it with scattered hair and it erases some hairs, do you have a video of a person you cut out with hair scattered and smoothen the edges of the cutout person? Like from head to toe, If you can do that I'm sure you can gain more viewers with that kind of video and blend it to another image that would be helpful

What are you made of? What do you eat? It's amazing that how much you hold the knowledge in Photoshop and the explanation of each and every steps you do to us. O Man! This is why Playing video games is nothing but waste of time. it's very much meaningful. Wish I could get you as my neighbour!

Everything you do is great but If I let say need that time to do on an image probably I won't do it because that is not only thing that should be done on the photo. Shorten your explanations on necessary and present only that. A lot of people will understand much better.

So good! One tip I use when I do contract the selection is to Hide the selection. The grey tinkling selection line disappears so I have a clear view of what I'm doing while working on the edges.

I followed all your steps and think I have it. I dont know how to get back to my now edited photo. If I flatten the work, I get a couple (my image) on a black background. How do I get out?

What about non composite fringe? I have a black and white photo, A real photo. Nothing was composited. I have this white fringe around my subject I am trying to remove. Zero masks.

I've been taking Photoshop classes for years and I never knew you could make so much use out of the smudge tool and the legacy brightness and contrast. Very well-made video!
