personally, a little repulsed by how he straight up traced the entire picture as is. I am all for using reference cause quite frankly- art is hardly possible without a reference, be it an object or perspective guides. but this my dude, ain't it for me.

Well I love your all Photoshop tutorials but I'm upset with this video. This is actually not a Digital Painting. Digital Painting is totally a different thing. We can call this photo manipulation something like this.

Uh this is the same as practically tracing. not actually painting using a reference photo. you can easily do this with filters if you wanted to. Please for all beginners this is not proper digital painting practice.
